Stop falls

Investigating the role of social interactions and physical activity on falls risk in older adults

What is the project about?

Accidental falls are a growing problem in older adults. There are a large range of factors that can affect falls risk, including our physical and mental health as well as our social interactions. This study of older adults will measure many of these factors via questionnaires, as well as tracking any falls over 12 months. The study aims to improve our understanding of the long-term impacts of social relationships, physical activity, physical and mental health on accidental falls to help inform ways to prevent falling in older adults.

What is involved?

If you are over 65 years of age and can walk independently you may be eligible to participate in this research project.

The STOP Falls study utilises online computer questionnaires. You will first be required to provide demographic information (e.g. date of birth), details about your physical and medical health (e.g. any disability or disease that you are affected by) and your living circumstances (e.g. the type of accommodation you live in). You will then be asked to complete questionnaires relating to physical activity, social interaction, anxiety, depression, stress and quality of life.

Over the following year we ask you to complete an online diary to record details on the timing, location, and cause of any falls that you experience. You will also be asked to complete a subset of the questionnaires outlined above every 3 months, for a total of 3 times over the follow-up period. Reminder emails will guide you through the process. If you no longer want to be part of the project you will be able to opt out of reminders and the remainder of the project.
