Nyaal Banyul Geelong Convention and Event Centre

The Nyaal Banyul Geelong Convention and Event Centre (GCEC) is full steam ahead, with early works to put the superstructure in place underway. Give Where You Live Foundation CEO, Bill Mithen joined Victorian Minister for Regional Development, Gayle Tierney MP at the GCEC site, where 12 local trainees and apprentices are working on the job. These 12 local workers will be joined by 16 more as the project progresses through the GCEC Early Engagement Social Procurement (GEESP) program. By the time Nyaal Banyul GCEC is complete, the 28 trainees and apprentices – who have experienced barriers to employment – will have received 12 weeks of fully funded training counting towards a Certificate II in Construction Pathways through Gordon TAFE. The GEESP partnership has been co-designed by Development Victoria, the Give Where You Live Foundation’s GROW - G21 Regional Opportunities For Work initiative, social enterprise gforce employment + recruitment and will be delivered by builder Built. as the head contractor. The program will support local businesses, individuals and the wider community by giving these trainees and apprentices real-world training and experience working with a team of 1,450 people on this much anticipated project. “The social procurement results delivered through Nyaal Banyul will contribute to GROW’s goal of a future where everyone who wants to work has the opportunity and support to work, with a particular focus on addressing long-term unemployment and supporting suburbs in our region with higher levels of disadvantage," Bill Mithen said. We are proud to share the brand for Geelong’s new convention and event centre. To get the opportunity to work with a gifted narrative and name has been a career highlight for our team. We are so proud of the work as it reflects a genuine partnership between the Wadawurrung Traditional Owners, Elizabeth Kozmevski, Kaitlyn Kirkwood and their team at  Nyaal Banyul Geelong Convention and Event Centre and the people of Geelong. Nyaal Banyul Geelong Convention and Event Centre pays homage to the site’s history on the iconic Western Beach cliffs in Djilang (Geelong). For thousands of years, the Wadawurrung People have come together here to yarn, celebrate, share songs and dance, trade, make decisions, solve problems and pass on knowledge. We positioned the new brand with empathy and deep respect for the rich cultural significance of Wadawurrung Country, its People and the gifted name ‘Nyaal Banyul’, meaning ‘open your eyes to the hills’. 'Gather round to experience a new perspective’ reflects the site’s history and also extends an invitation to all to experience and connect with new ideas and perspectives. First Nations art opportunity 📢 ⁠ Expressions of Interest are now open for First Nations artists to develop the design narratives and artistic expression to several locations within the future Nyaal Banyul Geelong Convention and Event Centre precinct.⁠ ⁠ The Wadawurrung Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation have been important partners in shaping the precinct’s design, identity, and recognition of local cultural heritage. What's in a name? Nyaal Banyul, which translates to ‘Open your eyes to the hills,’ was generously gifted to the venue by the Wadawurrung Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation. Wadawurrung People across Wadawurrung Country have always come together for gatherings, cultural business, celebrations and ceremonies. In Wadawurrung language these gatherings are known as baierr. For thousands of generations, Wadawurrung People have gathered on the Western Cliffs of Geelong/Djilang for baierr – to yarn, celebrate, share songs and dance, trade, make decisions, solve problems and pass on knowledge. Visitors to Nyaal Banyul are invited to open their eyes to the hills of Wadawurrung Country. In all directions, the hills hold the stories, songs and dance of past baierr. Nyaal Banyul.
