A vision for a food and water secure world.
About us
The Daugherty Water for Food Global Institute at the University of Nebraska was founded in 2010 by the Robert B. Daugherty Foundation to address the global challenge of achieving food security with less stress on water resources through improved water management in agricultural and food systems. We are committed to ensuring a water and food secure world while maintaining the use of water for other human and environmental needs. The University of Nebraska has invested in three interdisciplinary, university-wide institutes — including the Daugherty Water for Food Global Institute — that leverage talent and research-based expertise from across the University of Nebraska system to focus on complex state, national and global challenges. How is #aquifer depletion connected to loss of #drought resilience? In the Spring Issue of Irrigation Today, DWFI Director of Policy Nicholas Brozovic shares how groundwater depletion makes agricultural production more physically and economically vulnerable to drought risks, both now and in the future. Read the article: https://lnkd.in/gqf6EfK3

In her most recent Irrigation Today article, Renata Rimšaitė, Ph.D. discusses that changes in precipitation may potentially increase conflicts between different water users. Water solutions need to focus on aligning water users’ goals, and she provides examples of successful water policies and collaborative efforts which have achieved this. Renata Rimšaitė, Ph.D. and Rachel Williss visited the National Center for Alluvial Aquifer Research in Stoneville, Missippi in an information exchange on groundwater management.
Last week, Rachel Williss and I had a fantastic visit with the team at the National Center for Alluvial Aquifer Research in Stoneville, Mississippi. We shared our research on groundwater management policies in the High Plains and changing irrigation trends in the US. In return, we gained many insights about agricultural water management in the Mississippi Delta. We visited fields and talked about the Mississippi River Valley alluvial aquifer usage for agriculture with scientists, farmers, and local government representatives, which included topics on 💧 the impact of droughts and floods and the importance of drainage 💧 furrow and sprinkler irrigation 💧 soil moisture management and cover crops 💧 growing soybeans, corn, and new crops for us - rice and cotton 💧 water law, as well as voluntary and regulatory water management approaches, and more! Understanding the local context remains key when looking for ag water management solutions to climate-related challenges. Nebraska's #watermanagement techniques are looked to as a blueprint from all over the world. We thank Upper Big Blue Natural Resources District (NRD) for sharing how Nebraska manages #groundwater for #agriculture with the delegation from Mato Grosso, Brazil this week.
Once again this year, we were pleased to host a delegation of scientists, policy makers, and business people from Mato Grosso, Brazil. The language barrier was no impediment to a robust discussion about how Nebraska's Natural Resources Districts manage groundwater for agriculture and all beneficial uses across the state. These leaders were eager to learn more about the unique and successful system of governance in Nebraska that provides local control and local solutions through the NRDs. Special thanks to the Daugherty Water for Food Global Institute at the University of Nebraska for making this information exchange possible! #water4food

Three takeaways from DWFI's Student Research Forum: #1. DWFI Supported Students are the future of food and water security 💧🌱 With projects ranging in applications for high productivity agriculture, smallholder farming, and water quality, DWFI students, with mentorship from faculty fellows, are answering questions around how we can produce more food for a growing population with less pressure on our water resources. #2. Careers in food and water security await outside of academia 📚 In a panel featuring Ryan Chapman, Lower Platte North NRD, Tim Mundorf, Nutrient Management Lead, Central Valley Ag Cooperative, and Renata Rimšaitė, Ph.D., DWFI Senior Program Manager, students were exposed to the careers outside of an academic setting, and the pathways to get there. #3. Networking is fun! 🤝 After presenting their research, DWFI supported students had the opportunity to chat and network after the forum at Hardin Hall on East Campus! Congratulations to all of our wonderful supported students, and thank you to their faculty fellow advisors.
