NCC Freedom Summer

NCC Freedom Summer is a faith based civic engagement campaign inspired by the 1964 Freedom Summer, which sought to integrate Mississippi’s segregated political system. Almost one thousand five hundred volunteers,  including 254 NCC-sponsored clergy, worked in project offices across Mississippi to pursue this pioneering effort.

In the same spirit, NCC Freedom Summer seeks to educate, engage, and empower voters for social change. This campaign will mobilize voters in 5 priority states (Mississippi, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Michigan) through voter registration, voter education, and voter mobilization efforts for the 2024 election. NCC Freedom Summer will launch with a Juneteenth Day of Action on June 19, 2024 and conclude with a Freedom Summit on August 17, 2024.

By partnering with NCC Freedom Summer, your organization will have the opportunity to align itself with a meaningful cause and make a tangible impact in communities across the United States.

The Freedom Academy is designed as an intensive six-week virtual “Sunday school” to educate on the principles of civic engagement, social justice, and the importance of voting rights from a faith-based perspective. At the completion of the program, attendees will receive a NCC Freedom Academy Certificate.

Freedom Fellows are the cornerstone of the NCC Freedom Summer 60th-anniversary commemorative campaign. Through your participation as a leader in this multi-week immersive fellowship program, you will establish community hubs and organize local churches for various outreach activities, including Bible study, canvassing, and voter empowerment and civic education workshops.

NCC Freedom Summer will recruit Freedom Fellows to engage congregations for voter registration, community canvassing, and phone and text banking.

  • Application Deadline: May 15, 2024

NCC Freedom Summer will host a five-city Freedom Ride to empower voters and inspire communities through faith, food, and fellowship. NCC Freedom Ride will consist of a faith breakfast, press conference, canvassing, community worship service, and fish fry.
