About us
The Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry employs more than 5,000 workers in 200 offices statewide. Established in 1913, the department originally inspected the working conditions in factories around the state. Over time, the department's responsibilities expanded. L&I administers benefits to unemployed individuals, oversees the administration of workers' compensation benefits to individuals with job related injuries, and provides vocational rehabilitation to individuals with disabilities. The department prepares job seekers for the global workforce through employment and job training services for adult, youth, older workers, and dislocated workers. In addition, L&I enforces various laws and safety standards in the workplace and administers the commonwealth's programs for community service by young Pennsylvanians. L&I also promotes economic development and an improved business climate through a variety of initiatives and programs to help Pennsylvania's workforce remain world-class and globally competitive.

On Wednesday, Secretary Nancy A. Walker celebrated Youth Apprenticeship Week by visiting with masonry students and staff at the Trade Institute of Pittsburgh (TIP). TIP offers a registered pre-apprenticeship program that empowers individuals facing barriers to employment, those with criminal backgrounds, and other marginalized populations to find their next career opportunity.

Today, Secretary Nancy A. Walker met with fifth graders from Fort Cherry School District visiting Junior Achievement of Western PA’s (JA) experiential learning lab JA Biztown® to highlight the work being done to empower the next generation of workers and prepare them with the skills and knowledge needed for future job markets. Secretary Walker even had the chance to elect JA BizTown’s new mayor – Fort Cherry fifth grader, Sam!

Last week, the FTC ruled to ban noncompete agreements nationwide, affecting about 30 million American workers. On this Workers Memorial Day, we recognize the labor movement’s decades-long fight for safer workplaces and advocate for policies that protect Pennsylvania workers from being injured on the job. L&I Secretary Nancy A. Walker, Deputy Secretary Gerald Mullery, and Harrisburg labor leaders gathered at Riverfront Park in Harrisburg this morning to honor lives lost and renew the call to strengthen worker protections in Pennsylvania.

This award recognize employers who implement exceptional safety strategies, injury-prevention programs, and best practices that protect our workers. On Tuesday, the Federal Trade Commission ruled to ban noncompete agreements in the U.S. The FTC estimates this ruling will lead to more than 8,500 new businesses nationally and allows typical workers to earn $524 more per year. Earlier this week, Secretary Nancy A. Walker joined a bipartisan group of lawmakers and Eastern Atlantic States Regional Council of Carpenters to highlight the Shapiro Administration’s effort to protect Pennsylvania workers against wage theft and tax fraud and hold employers accountable against worker misclassification. Governor Shapiro is calling for a $1.2 million investment in L&I’s Bureau of Labor Law Compliance to hire 12 new labor law compliance investigators.
