Impa Somayanda

Background

Impa Somayanda joined the Department of Plant and Soil Science at Texas Tech as a Research Assistant Professor in April 2022. She received her Masters and Doctorate degree from the University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore, India. Prior to joining Texas Tech, she served as a research associate and research manager at Kansas State University and a postdoctoral fellow and project scientist at the International Rice Research Institute, Philippines.

She is a crop physiologist, with experience in abiotic stress physiology of different cereals including rice, wheat, sorghum, and corn and changes in grain micronutrients composition under stress conditions. She has authored 34 peer-reviewed journal articles with 2104 citations and an H index of 22.

Research Interests

Her research program at Texas Tech focuses on:

  • Enhancing yield potential and abiotic stress resilience in sorghum
  • Developing novel physiological and biochemical tools and methods to enhance quality and productivity of grain sorghum
  • Exploring opportunities to improve the nutritional quality of forage sorghum and millet
