Everlaw announces an expansion of its Everlaw for Good Program – including its first-ever program director, greater investments and access to its cutting-edge generative AI features – aimed at fostering a fairer legal system by removing financial and operational barriers to equitable access to justice. Everlaw is announcing this at the 2024 American Bar Association/National Legal Aid & Defender Association Equal Justice Conference in Detroit. #EJC2024 Statistics reveal a stark reality: only 24% of civil cases in U.S. state courts have representation on both sides, and a staggering 92% of civil legal problems encountered by low-income Americans remain unresolved. Despite the right to representation in criminal cases being enshrined in the U.S. Constitution, public defenders carry five times the workload considered acceptable for effective representation. Everlaw for Good aims to help address these and other systemic challenges by providing free and discounted access to the company’s world-class litigation and investigative software to qualified 501(c)(3) organizations, pro bono practices and investigative journalists focused on justice issues often overlooked by market forces. Since 2017, Everlaw has contributed approximately $2.75 million in platform services for the program and empowered more than 125 organizations to streamline their operations and amplify their impact. With social impact expert Joanne Sprague now at the helm as its first-ever director, the program aims to grow cases supported by 60% in the next year and deliver $1 million in in-kind platform services. Quick hits from my first #EJC2024 I had a great time representing Everlaw for Good in our first year sponsoring and exhibiting at the National Legal Aid & Defender Association / American Bar Association Equal Justice Conference last week. A few quick observations from three days of talking about tech, #ediscovery and #AI for access to justice with 1,100 legal aid professionals: 1. Tech is just a part of the conversation, but it's an important one. Most of the conference was focused on legal aid orgs' day-to-day challenges: community lawyering, people-centered justice, funding, self-care, and more. But tech was on the table too, from Windows to TikTok. As AJ says, the legal industry deserves modern technology - and so does the legal aid community. I especially love the practical solutions Shellie Reid and the Legal Services National Technology Assistance Project network contribute to this conversation. 2. AI still feels scary and unknown, but the use cases are growing. Attendees recognized that AI tools, if deployed responsibly, hold the potential to help narrow the justice gap, and some great sessions, including those led by Sateesh Nori and Margaret Hagan, showcased how clinics and pro bono service providers have used them to automate repetitive tasks and speed up client intake. 3. Impact litigation is not a niche practice area for legal service providers. While many organizations focus on limited scope or direct representation and can't take on larger and more complex cases, many practitioners I met have staff dedicated to impact litigation and were excited by the opportunity to leverage world-class ediscovery tech (for free!) to supercharge their cases. 4. Detroit! The city is practically unrecognizable from when I last spent time at the RenCen in 2004. The riverwalk, the outdoor art, the cuisine - what a treat.
