The U.S. Plastics Pact Roadmap is helping realize meaningful, targeted outcomes for a circular economy for plastic packaging. By unifying stakeholders across the entire plastics value chain to rethink the way we design, use, and reuse plastics, we are ultimately reducing plastic waste in our environment and creating a circular economy for plastics.

Addressing Key Challenges

Disaggregated U.S. infrastructure and the global COVID-19 pandemic have put immense strain on the plastics packaging value chain. The U.S. Plastics Pact Roadmap illustrates how the U.S. Pact and its signatories, known as Activators, will approach each of its four 2025 targets through specific actions, responsibilities, and interim timeframes in order to realize meaningful, targeted outcomes for a circular economy for plastic packaging.

The U.S. Pact is aligned on four 2025 targets to address plastic waste at its source:

Target 1 - Checklist Icon - 2025 List of Problematic Packaging

Define a list of packaging that is problematic or unnecessary by 2021 and take measures to eliminate the items on the list by 2025.

Target 2 - Recycling Mobius - 100% Packaging Recyclable Reusable Or Compostable

100% of plastic packaging will be reusable, recyclable, or compostable by 2025.

Target 3 - Recycling Container Icon - 50% Packaging Recycled Or Composted

Undertake ambitious actions to effectively recycle or compost 50% of plastic packaging by 2025.

Target 4 - 30% - Recycled or Bio-based Packaging

Achieve an average of 30% recycled content or responsibly sourced, bio-based content by 2025.

The Roadmap Aims to Inspire and Galvanize Action

The Roadmap shows what U.S. Pact Activators and stakeholders can do to deliver against the targets, with key outcomes in specific interim timeframes. It aims to inspire Activators and supporters to act, and to galvanize wider action by governments, investors, not-for-profit organizations, and businesses who are not members of the U.S. Pact. Achieving the targets will bring huge environmental, social, and economic benefits. It will, however, require difficult decisions to be made, significant investment, and some compromise.

To impact what otherwise would be generational shifts in the market in only a few years, the Roadmap focuses on the key outcomes for each target, with corresponding actions and timelines.
