Our Wander More This Winter series aims to encourage people to get out in the Lakes and enjoy its mental and physical health benefits.

Our second feature comes from Ellie, our Communications Assistant, and Emily, our Digital Content Officer, who hopped on a bus to make the most of the new £2 bus fare. Despite the inevitable rain, they had a great day exploring the Lakes!

Read on to hear about their journey.

Beginners on the bus

We are both beginners with bus-taking, but the experience was made really straightforward with the Stagecoach app and our very friendly bus driver. We downloaded the Stagecoach app to help us plan the route. Mobile tickets are easy to buy and download.

If mobile tickets aren’t for you, as we got onto the bus our driver was super helpful, and explained the best and cheapest route to us. In fact, all of the bus drivers in the Lake District are trained to advise on the best value ticket for each passenger. It cost us just £2 for a single ticket on the 555 up to Keswick.

The 555 route

Despite the classic Lake District rain, and occasional sleet, the route is beautiful. The 555 bus takes you through Staveley, Windermere, Ambleside, Grasmere and Keswick, terminating at Booths in Keswick. Our lovely driver, Phillip, even stopped the bus so that we could admire the view at Low Wood Bay, which is rumoured to be the best bus stop view in the country. It didn’t disappoint! We were reliably informed by Phillip that the 555 is very popular with both tourists and locals.

A Keswick day out

Once we arrived in Keswick, there were lots of things to do. We opted for a hot chocolate, and then a mooch in the LDNPA Keswick Information Centre, where there are lots of lovely gifts and souvenirs. A stroll down to the lake, a trip to the cinema or a visit to the Pencil Museum are other fun and family friendly options after a beautiful bus ride.

A £2 adventure

The £2 bus fare cap means that you can see so much of our lovely Lake District for an amazing price. We had a fantastic day, and really felt we’d been on an adventure! Check out the Stagecoach website for information on participating routes and services.
