What impact does #disinformation have on the #wind energy industry? And what are we doing about it? Last week, Ocean Energy Pathway hosted our inaugural event at Wilton Park, focussed on tackling disinformation about wind power. We convened leading strategists and practitioners who are each working to combat the problem in the first shared global dialogue to work together. Leaders from industry, civil society, academia, and government shared intelligence and insight on disinformation campaigns so that we can enhance our shared approach to tackling it. Wind energy underpins energy security, prosperous economies, and a world on track for 1.5C, but it needs to scale faster if we are to triple renewable energy by 2030 and meet our global goals. For countries with untapped potential in offshore wind for example, that means developing the right policy, securing a public mandate, driving political momentum, and attracting investment in harmony with ocean ecosystems. Getting this wrong risks leaving communities behind and leaving the benefits of the energy transition on the table. Disinformation delays projects and elevates policy risk, increasing the costs of investment and slowing the pace of the energy transition. To effectively tackle this challenge we will need new modes of engagement, consensus building, and knowledge sharing across our disciplines and across borders. We were proud to bring together colleagues from Australia, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Egypt, India, Japan, Mexico, Paraguay, the Philippines, South Africa, the United Kingdom, and the United States. This includes social scientists who have led cutting-edge research into anti-renewables disinformation narratives and distribution networks, senior figures from the wind energy industry, and political strategists who have tested a range of approaches to combat anti-renewables disinformation. We are pleased to have facilitated new relationships amongst colleagues and leave feeling energised to carry forward this work. Ocean Energy Pathway will continue building initiatives and programming, including further work related to disinformation, with the aim of driving forward the acceleration of sustainable offshore wind sectors in our key geographies. Thank you to our partners who supported this event, the Global Strategic Communications Council (GSCC) and Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC), and the team at Wilton Park for hosting.

Ocean Energy Pathway is delighted that Adam Bruce has joined us as our first Global Envoy. Adam brings nearly twenty years’ experience in renewable energy, with a recent career in offshore wind that has taken him around the world. As OEP looks to grow our networks to help accelerate the deployment of offshore wind at scale Adam will help us to engage with governments, regulators and important stakeholders. Adam said: "COP Dubai saw the adoption of a target to triple the installed capacity of renewable energy. For many countries that means building very large amounts of bulk renewable energy generation offshore. OEP’s mission to accelerate the deployment of offshore wind, while working closely with other marine communities, is one that I fully support. I am very proud to be joining this excellent team, with such a clear mandate to help deliver offshore wind at scale across multiple markets". Adam is speaking at the All-Energy Exhibition and Conference on 15 May in the opening session on #OffshoreWind and would be delighted to meet anyone who wants to learn more about OEP and our mission. #3xRE

An energizing inaugural trip to International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and the World Future Energy Summit for team OEP! It was great to spend time with colleagues from industry, civil society, and government, and to support a number of highlights such as the Global Offshore Wind Alliance (GOWA) Ministerial Dialogue on Offshore Wind and the Global Renewables Alliance launch of the #Time4Action campaign. Special congratulations to the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) on the launch of their mammoth 2024 annual Global Wind Report which shows that 2023 was the most successful year for wind energy installations with 117 GW installed, including 10.8 GW of new offshore wind – bringing total global #OffshoreWind capacity to 75.2 GW and making 2023 the second-highest year for new offshore wind capacity. Yet, significant obstacles remain to this growth delivering on the #3xRE pledge, and the global OEP team used time together in Abu Dhabi to continue their work developing pathways to accelerate the sustainable growth of the sector.

Ocean Energy Pathway is reflecting on a productive two weeks spent in #Brazil, meeting policymakers and stakeholders in civil society and industry. From conversations in Brasilia, São Paulo, and Rio de Janeiro, it is clear that momentum around Brazil’s #OffshoreWind sector is growing. Charles Ogilvie OBE, Roberta Cox, and Navneet Khinda also represented OEP at the Brazilian Offshore Wind Summit, contributing to dialogue on global best practice and presenting OEP’s mission to the audience. There, OEP convened a conversation on offtake and demand growth for offshore wind power from key hard-to-abate sectors in the country. This comes at a critical time for the sector, especially as news around the Offshore Wind legislation develops. Roberta Cox notes the Offshore Wind Bill was sent to the Infrastructure Commission today and that the Senate Board of Directors defined that the Infrastructure Committee (CI) will be the only panel to analyze offshore wind farms. Link: https://lnkd.in/gNfBRm4a OEP will continue to work with stakeholders by making strategic investments in research, knowledge-exchange, and dialogue across a variety of policy issues.
