Most Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) are in the southern part of the United States. Many of these institutions were founded after the Civil War to provide educational opportunities for Black Americans previously denied access to higher education. 1. Jackson State University
JSU is a public, historically black university in Jackson, Mississippi. Founded in 1877, Jackson State is the second-oldest public university in the state. It is part of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund and one of five public HBCUs in the state. With over 8,000 students, Jackson State offers over 80 traditional undergraduate and graduate degree programs in business and management, education, engineering, and science.

Albany State University is a public university in the Georgia town of Albany. It is one of three historically black colleges and universities in the University System of Georgia. Established in 1903 as the Albany Bible and Manual Training Institute, it has evolved over the years, becoming Albany State College in 1943 and then Albany State University in 1996.

It is the state’s oldest public historically black university (HBCU), founded in 1890 as a land grant college. Another private HBCU, Huston-Tillotson University, is in the Texas capital city of Austin. However, it is known for its commitment to diversity, inclusion, academic excellence, and community engagement.

Langston University is a historically black public university in Oklahoma. It is the only HBCU in the state and the oldest institution of higher education in Oklahoma. Historically Black Colleges and Universities are often seen as a cultural touchstone for Black students, providing a safe and welcoming environment to learn and grow. HBCUs have a long history of providing educational opportunities for Black American students and helping to foster a sense of community and identity.
Students attend HBCUs for various reasons, including the unique academic and cultural experiences they offer. Other benefits of attending an HBCU are access to a strong alum network and an environment where they can feel comfortable and supported.

What are the Challenges and Barriers to Success for Black Students?
On a broad level, systemic racism continues to be a significant barrier for Black students. It includes racism in the form of lower expectations, stereotypes, and discrimination that can create an oppressive environment. Socioeconomic disparities can add additional barriers for Black students. In addition, these disparities can create inequities in access to quality education, leading to lower graduation rates among Black students.
From kindergarten, many black students face inadequate education due to insufficient school resources and funding. This disparity can make it difficult for students to engage in their classes, achieve academic success, and further their education. In high school, many Black students face limited access to resources such as college prep programs, internships, and scholarships which can limit their ability to access higher education and further their educational goals.
When they get to college, students often need more support systems and mentorships to help them navigate their educational journey. Unfortunately, this lack of support can lead to isolation, discouragement, and increased difficulty in succeeding in school.
Are HBCUs Expensive?
HBCUs are not necessarily more expensive than other colleges and universities. Many HBCUs offer their students competitive tuition rates and generous financial aid packages. Additionally, HBCUs often have unique scholarship and grant opportunities that can help reduce college costs.
