The Northern Territory Government has adopted the Management of Greenhouse Gas Emissions from the Onshore Gas Industry Policy Statement to clarify its expectations for the management of greenhouse gas emissions from the onshore gas industry and the delivery of Recommendation 9.8. The Policy Statement is on the DEPWS website.

The Policy Statement requires all interest holders applying for approvals associated with onshore gas production to prepare and submit a greenhouse gas abatement plan (GGAP) demonstrating how the interest holder will contribute towards delivery of the Territory’s net zero emissions by 2050 target. At a minimum the GGAP must demonstrate that collectively the interest holders’ NT onshore gas production operations will be net zero by 2050.

The NT Government has committed to amending its legislative framework for the onshore gas industry to incorporate the requirements of the Policy Statement.

The NT and Australian governments will work together to seek to ensure that Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions don’t increase as a result of onshore petroleum production in the Northern Territory and to achieve Australia’s emissions target of net zero by 2050.
