Leadership Calgary (https://leadershipcalgary.wordpress.com) annually brings together a 30-person cohort of community leaders from the business, government and non-profit sectors. I consider my experiences and the network of people I met during this program to be amongst the most valuable attributes I bring to my work and volunteer life.

  • Competitive advantage development in the National Hockey League: the roles of asset stocks, asset flows, and entrepreneurship

Asset stocks and asset flows have been conceptualized in firm resource theory as having distinct, yet implicitly related, effects on an organization's competitive advantage. However, there still remain important theoretical questions regarding the nature of the process firms undergo in developing competitive advantage. This dissertation conceptualizes competitive advantage development as a fundamentally entrepreneurial process, with two main types of entrepreneurial acts at the core. The setting of the study, the National Hockey League (NHL), provides a rich source of data, through a long time series (1984-1997).

After years of observing the need for quality affordable space to support creative activity in Calgary, the CADA Board agreed to a proactive approach to the challenge modelled on successes observed in Toronto and Minneapolis. A senior leader (Reid Henry) was recruited from Toronto to head up the initiative and the search for a project began.

In late 2009, The Calgary Foundation (TCF) approached CADA with the opportunity to jointly bid on a surplus site owned by the Calgary Board of Education (CBE). While Reid prepared the business case, my role was primarily to liaise with my board and the TCF board to develop a framework to purchase, finance the site, with appropriate governance before, during and after the transaction.

After a full year of painstaking work with the community, City Council, CADA and TCF boards, cSPACE Projects was incorporated and took ownership of the site. Reid, Peter Boyd (CADA Chair) and I were the founding board members.

Key elements of this phase of the project's success included:
    - deep and authentic community engagement, with the neighbourhood and arts communities both included in the process
    - strong relationships with local councillors and other government representatives
    - helping boards navigate and manage the risk associated with a completely new line of business (real estate development)
    - developing the legal frameworks involved with incorporating a joint venture, including a formal meeting to gain approval from City Council, and finding creative ways to meet governance needs of all parties
    - creatively financing the $8M purchase price (in a time crunch) through a major gift ($3M) and a loan from The Calgary Foundation. Subsequently, a $5M grant was provided by The City of Calgary.
    - helping to recruit and set up the independent board for cSPACE while maintaining a cooperative, shared service approach to helping the organization gain operational capacity

This project is on track to open in 2016.

Our committee generated nearly $1M in cash and in-kind sponsorships for the hosting program that saw hundreds of thousands of Calgarians have music experiences through our "March Music Month" program, with over 3000 youth participating in a massed band event, music on the CTrains, and too many concerts to count. Calgary Music, an agency dedicated to developing the local music scene, was created as a legacy of the event.

Striving to be “world-class” is not good enough for Terry Rock, Calgary’s leading booster for arts and culture. To really make great things happen in the province, Albertans should aim to create cities “for the world.” He argues that if we truly embrace this way of thinking and use it as an ethical framework to guide the way we do business, our economic and social infrastructure will create lasting legacies.

In early 2015 I took a big step out of my comfort zone and put my name forward as the PC candidate for Calgary Buffalo. With over 150 volunteers and a very successful fundraising effort, my team helped me to second place in the election. We were one of the few PC campaigns that gained votes from the previous election. We knocked on over 9000 doors and spent over 50 hours on the street meeting voters.

As someone who is not partisan by nature, but is generally committed to building community, this was a very challenging experience. I learned a lot about myself and my family, and am proud to have run a campaign with integrity, grit and perseverance. I made new friends and deepened my friendships with others. (And I'd do it again!)
