Overview

Developed in partnership with the National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA), Roofing covers the foundational skills of safety, drawings and substrates before covering steep-slope and low-slope roofing systems.

Roofing supports two unique training pathways and credentials for steep-slope roofers and low-slope roofers. Completion of the entire Roofing curriculum prepares a learner for NRCA ProCertification, a series of assessments that measure expertise on different types of roof system installation and result in a professional credential.

The two-level Roofing curriculum also complies with the U.S. Department of Labor’s standards for apprenticeship programs.

NRCA: A National Roofing Apprenticeship Program

NRCA partnered with the National Center for Construction Education and Research to create a national roofing apprenticeship program, which was adopted by the Associated Builders and Contractors. Learn about the program and its benefits for the industry.

Module ID 16102: Discusses the best safety practices for roofing and educates about potential dangers on the job. Reviews risk mitigation, hazard control, safety-related resources, fall protection, and ladder safety.

Fall Protection Orientation

Module ID 75901: Covers fundamental safety and hazard recognition concepts. Introduces the role of OSHA in regulating elevated work on the jobsite and the causes, costs, and consequences of falls. Presents proper use of fall protection equipment; safe use of stairs, ladders, and scaffolds; and guidelines for use of aerial lifts.

Module ID 16103: Describes types of construction documents and explains how to navigate a drawing set to find roofing information. Explains the role of the project manual and specifications. Introduces the concept of building information modeling (BIM).

Module ID 16106: Introduces important concepts about low-slope roof systems and their design, components, and installation. Outlines common types of roof decks, insulation, and cover boards. Describes attachment methods and reviews types of flashings.

Substrates, Decks, and Roof Insulation

Module ID 16104: Overviews common types of roof decks and insulation and related considerations. Explains basic principles of heat transfer, vapor movement, and deck movement and how roofs are designed to accommodate them. Describes general procedures for installing vapor retarders, insulation, cover boards, and tapered insulation.

Sheet Metal in Roofing

Module ID 16107: Describes the properties of different types of metal that impact the way sheet metal is used in construction. Overviews the tools used to measure, layout, and install sheet metal components in roof systems. Outlines commonly used sheet metal roofing components and basic procedures used to prepare and install them.

Rigging Practices

Module ID 38102: Describes basic rigging and safety practices related to rigging activities. Describes the use and inspection of equipment and hardware used in rigging. Explains how to apply common hitches. Covers jacks and hoisting materials.

Asphalt Shingle Roof Systems

Module ID 16201: Discusses asphalt shingles as well as the tools and procedures used in the application of these systems. Describes appropriate attachment techniques and safety precautions involved in asphalt shingles installation and repair.

Clay and Concrete Tile Roof Systems

Wood Roof Systems

Module ID 16203: Outlines the components, tools, and installation methods used for wood roof systems. Distinguishes between wood shingles and wood shakes. Identifies common mistakes in the installation of wood roof systems and introduces basic repair methods.

Slate Roof Systems

Module ID 16204: Describes slate roof system components, styles, tools, and safety considerations. Details appropriate procedures for the installation and repair of these systems.

Metal Roof Systems
15 Hours

Module ID 16205: Describes the various types of metal roofs, including architectural, structural, and metal shingle systems. Discusses the seam types, methods, and tools used in metal roof installation. Details the proper tools and techniques used for the installation of these features.

Thermoplastic Roof Systems
10 Hours

Module ID 16206: Describes types of thermoplastic roof systems and outlines their installation and repair. Identifies types of field membranes, pre-manufactured flashing accessories, attachment components, and related tools.

EPDM Roof Systems
10 Hours

Module ID 16207: Describes types of EPDM roof systems and their components. Identifies field membrane types, pre-manufactured flashing accessories, attachment methods, and components of EPDM roof systems. Describes installation and repair of these systems.

Built-Up Roof Systems
15 Hours

Module ID 16208: Introduces types of built-up roof (BUR) systems and their components. Outlines basic installation and repair methods associated with BUR system, as well as related tools.

Modified Bitumen Roof Systems
15 Hours

Module ID 16209: Describes types and characteristics of modified bitumen (mod-bit) roof systems. Discusses the components, installation procedure, basic repair methods, and tools used for mod-bit systems.

Liquid-Applied Roofing
12.5 Hours

Module ID 16210: Describes liquid-applied roofing products and explains the difference between roof coatings and liquid-applied roof membranes. Outlines procedures and tools used to install and repair liquid-applied roofing.

Roofing Service and Repair
15 Hours

Module ID 16212: Introduces service and repair in the roofing industry and related career opportunities for roofers. Describes the general process of repair as well as specific repairs for specific steep- and low-slope roof systems.

Interim Credentials & Career Pathways

Roofing has two possible careers paths: Steep-Slope Roofer and Low-Slope Roofer. Roofing Levels 1 & 2 offer interim credentials for two distinct career plans culminating in a full craft completion.
