    The Food Science and Human Nutrition Department (FSHN) is one of the world’s largest combined academic programs where food science, nutritional sciences, and dietetics are all studied within one department. FSHN has nearly 30 full-time faculty members, 80 graduate assistants, and 600 undergraduate students. Our programs are accredited and recognized by the American Society for Nutrition, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and approved by the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT). After completing undergraduate degrees, our students typically move on to employment in the food industry or healthcare settings, graduate or professional programs. We have a strong record of excellent placement of our graduate students in industry, professional organizations, academia and government. Our faculty has trained at institutions from around the world; they have been widely successful in their teaching, research, and extension efforts. Throughout our programs in food science, nutrition, and dietetics, our faculty is recognized nationally and internationally as experts in their respective fields.

    Research Assistant Professor

    This is a 12-month non-tenure-accruing, full time position that will be 85% research and 15% teaching available in the Food Science and Human Nutrition Department, in the Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, at the University of Florida. This assignment may change in accordance with the needs of the unit. Duties will include conducting research in molecular nutrition, specific to the area of zinc metabolism and function. The incumbent is expected to perform independent research and supervise students and postdoctoral trainees. This person will maintain an active research program based on ability to attract competitive extramural funds in areas that complements current research in the Department. Collaboration is available and expected across other departments and institutions with related molecular nutrition expertise as well as commercial collaborations addressing both domestic and international concerns. The research efforts may venture into other fundable interests consistent with the Land Grant and Sea Grant missions of the University.
    This position will also teach the undergraduate course HUN 4813C Laboratory Techniques in Molecular Nutrition. This course focuses on laboratory techniques relevant to the study of nutrition, ranging from biochemistry, molecular biology, genomics, and bioinformatics. Teaching duties will include advising undergraduate students and supporting student professional development activities. There may be additional or different courses assigned that complements the Department’s educational programs.

Our Students

Honors Senior Nick Blumenthal has been deemed a 2024 Schwarzman Scholar, one of just 150 students worldwide making up the cohort. The 21-year-old Nutritional Sciences major in the UF College of Agricultural and Life Sciences is granted a full scholarship to Tsinghua University in Beijing, China and is UF’s third-ever recipient of this prestigious scholarship.
