The Engine Technology Forum evolved from the widely known Diesel Technology Forum which was founded in 2000. Members include leaders in internal combustion engines, fuels, and technologies. Since its inception more than 125 years ago, the internal combustion engine has evolved to meet the needs of a growing world. These engines are powered by petroleum-based fuels like gasoline, diesel and natural gas and renewable biobased fuels. Together they deliver efficient and reliable sources of power to build global economies, enable personal mobility, production of food, and the movement of goods and exchange of trade in every corner of the world.

New blog: The Piston People Down on the Farm Last week while working with the ETF team at our booth at the Association of Equipment Manufacturers’ Celebration of Modern Agriculture on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., a gentleman from the U.S. Department of Energy stopped by. After learning more about who we were and what we represented, he proclaimed that we were “the piston people.” Coming from an engineer, it made perfect sense. The Engine Technology Forum is indeed all about internal combustion engines and the parts therein. Pistons are a top iconic representation of the internal combustion engine in the visual arts world. Functionally pistons convert the released energy from the combustion chamber into mechanical work. It is the moving part of combustion. An engine can have 1 cylinder and 1 piston like a lawnmower or 4, 6 or 8 as is often the case for on and off-road vehicles and equipment. They can be smaller than a shot glass or larger than a barrel in some large ocean-going marine applications. Interesting story in The Wall Street Journal by Paul Berger about heavy duty trucks, diesel and battery electric options.
U.S. agriculture is among the most productive and economically valuable in the world, producing more yield in less time with fewer inputs. That’s due in part to the advancements of the machines and equipment that do the planting, harvesting, and tending of the land. Internal combustion engines and both gaseous and liquid fuels play vital roles in the farm economy. On any given farm, gasoline, diesel, kerosene, propane, and biodiesel fuels can all be found serving various roles in machines and equipment supporting farming activities and the farm infrastructure.
