Pennycress is an overwintering biofuel cover crop with ecosystem services.
Planted in temperate agro-ecosystems in the fall after cash crops such as corn and soybeans are harvested, Pennycress survives overwinter, flowers in the spring and is harvested in the early summer before the next round of corn and soybeans is planted. After harvest, pennycress seed is then sold to animal feed operations or to biorefineries and subsequently to airlines, providing farmers extra income during a time in the year when many fields are empty.
Pennycress has numerous ecosystem services, allowing us to sustain agriculture and clean up the planet.
