End Citizens United and Let America Vote Endorse Senator Catherine Cortez Masto for Reelection

May 13, 2021

End Citizens United (ECU) and Let America Vote (LAV) today endorsed Senator Catherine Cortez Masto for reelection. A staunch supporter of overturning Citizens United, Cortez Masto has consistently pushed for legislation in the Senate to get unlimited, undisclosed money out of politics and protect Nevadans’ right to vote.

“Over the course of her first term, Senator Cortez Masto has become one of leading voices in support of reining in the flood of unlimited and undisclosed money in politics,” said ECU/LAV President Tiffany Muller. “She knows that until we change the current system, which allows for a handful of billionaires and special interests to buy electoral and legislative outcomes, we can’t achieve progress on the issues important to Nevada families, like lowering prescription drug prices, protecting our environment and public lands, or making an economy that works for everyone. We’re proud to be standing with Senator Cortez Masto’s campaign again and we look forward to helping her win.”

“With dark money flooding our elections and hundreds of voter suppression laws being proposed across the country, I am focused on passing commonsense legislation to strengthen our democracy,” said Senator Catherine Cortez Masto. “Protecting the American people’s right to vote and making sure that corporate special interests can’t buy our elections are top priorities for me, and I look forward to continuing to work with End Citizens United to pass much-needed election reform.”

In the U.S. Senate, Cortez Masto has co-sponsored a number of anti-corruption reform bills, including the For the People Act, Democracy for All Amendment, DISCLOSE Act, Spotlight Act, and Honest Ads Act. One of her signature bills, the Inaugural Committee Transparency Act, would increase oversight and public disclosure of how presidential inaugural committees spend their money and make sure foreign actors can’t buy influence. During her 2016 run for Senate, End Citizens United spent $2.1 million dollars to help Cortez Masto win.

End Citizens United // Let America Vote is dedicated to combating the two biggest challenges facing our democracy: the corrosive impact of Big Money and attempts to block access to the ballot box. ECU led the effort to flip the House in 2018 by supporting pro-reform candidates that stood up to Big Money and corporate special interests. In 2020, ECU merged with Let America Vote, a grassroots organization that is fighting to protect all Americans’ right to vote, and played a pivotal role in electing pro-democracy Senate candidates that helped flip the chamber. ECU // LAV has more than four million members nationwide, including 42,000 in Nevada, and is entirely grassroots-funded with an average donation of just $14.
