Save the Rhino

Starting bid $800.00

(estimate $1000-1250)

1/1 giclee reproduction on wrapped canvas, floater frame, approx dimensions 18×18” Original work: mixed media-collage, acrylic paint, pencil, and oil pastel. The print depicts a mother Southern White Rhino and her calf with red-billed oxpecker birds picking off ticks from the pair.

On my recent safari in South Africa, I was happy to see so many rhinos in the private game reserves and the national park. When I visited Kenya in 1987, I only saw 2 rhinos, with one behind a double fenced compound. South Africa had been more successful in anti-poaching tactics than Kenya. Unfortunately, poaching was on the rise in KwaZulu-Natal province due to the pandemic shut-down of the country with many people without jobs and the Asian black market greed for the supposed anti-cancer effects of rhino horn. In the first 5 months of 2022, there were over 200 white rhino killed in that province alone.

Dr. Kathy Jonokuchi is a small animal relief practitioner and instructor for a veterinary assistant program for public high school students in Southern California. She has been creating art since childhood and first learned oil painting as a teen. After selling her practice of 23 years and with her children becoming more independent, she began to seriously pursue oil painting. With her art mentor, she regularly took classes for contemporary impressionist art within the studio and plein air painting on the beautiful California coastline. When the pandemic shut-down began, she changed her focus to non-representational mixed media work with another local mentor and more recently through a New Zealand artist’s self-paced web lessons and bi-monthly live online coaching sessions.

Hope Remains

Starting bid $350.00

(estimate $500-600)

An acrylic painting on back-stapled traditional wrapped canvas.  Subject matter: Stepan, the internet-famous, award-winning Ukrainian domestic housecat. (Ukrainian name: Степан).  Painting dimensions 14×18 inches.

From the moment the war broke out, I began following the events and seeking ways to help from afar. While connecting with various animal aid organizations online, I came across the Instagram account, @loveyoustepan and was immediately enamored of this very special cat.  Not only does his person have a knack for catching the best action photos of Stepan and his newly adopted sister @stephania_girlcat, they also tell the lived story of existing amidst continued terror, and they regularly raise funds to aid their fellow citizens and the animals affected by the war.  It seemed only fitting to combine my love of painting with my continued desire to help the animals in Ukraine; doing so by bringing Stepan’s essence to the canvas whilst supporting The Street Dog Coalition’s efforts to bring veterinary care to those who need it so desperately.

Dr. Lauren Kloer is a 2009 graduate of Colorado State University and began her veterinary career as an associate veterinarian practicing on the east coast.  After eight years in general practice, the mountain west called her back.  While she thoroughly enjoyed her time as an associate GP, her love of education and access-to-care medicine steered her career to one that primarily involves spay/neuter and access-to-care medicine consulting and relief work as well as teaching these topics to veterinary students and newer graduates via several non-profit organizations.  Additionally, she spends professional time helping to bring veterinary services to many of the country’s Indigenous tribes while supporting tribal sovereignty and efforts of Indigenous-led veterinary care.  When able, Dr. Lauren offers locum services to general practices and urgent care hospitals.

Dr. Lauren’s love for painting did not emerge until later in her life when she attended a group paint ‘n dine night, painting her parents’ beloved dog as a gift for them.  The experience was a novel and fun use of a part of the brain she hadn’t exercised, and she wanted to continue! From there, she sought painting endeavors through instructional classes and experimenting on her own.  Animals are her favorite subject matter, followed closely by majestic and mystical landscapes.  When not traveling for work or holding brush to canvas, she enjoys domestic and international exploration, is on a quest to visit all 50 states, and loves hiking with her adopted rez dog, cuddling with her two rescue cats and spending time with her niece.

Ben

Starting bid $500.00

(estimate $1000-1100)

By Ann L. Johnson DVM, MS, Diplomate, American College of Veterinary Surgeons, Professor Emerita College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Illinois

Description

Prisma color pencils; Image is 14 x 17 inches and with frame 22 x 25 inches

After retiring from the University, I had time to focus on my drawing skills.  I attended several drawing classes offered for community participation at Parkland Community College in Champaign IL where I was hooked on drawing with Prismacolor pencils. This media allows me to combine my passion for animals, particularly horses, and my love of drawing. I gain a tremendous sense of accomplishment transforming a blank page into a three dimensional image of a horse’s head, especially the soft nostrils and expressive eyes found in the old retired thoroughbred or the dressage horse in his prime, the seasoned show horse looking out of her stall, and the cowpony first learning to work in a bit. I am also interested in portraying the strong bond present in so many of our relationships with animals (and animals with each other), whether in the form of a portrait of a faithful old dog, the relationship of a cat with a stall bound horse recuperating from surgery, the interaction of a little girl and her cat, or the cowgirl with her horse.

As my art progressed, I applied for and was accepted by jury into the Illinois artisans program and the Hoosier Artist Gallery in Nashville, Indiana.

Eight years ago we moved to College Grove, Tennessee where I continued to take art lessons and added pastel painting to my repertoire although I still prefer to use pencils. In those years I exhibited in both the Williamson county fair and the Tennessee state fair winning blue ribbons in both for the pair of draft horses in harness and in one for the gypsy vanner pastel. I also participated in the inaugural Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration art show where I earned a reserve ribbon for my pastel painting of Rowdy Rev. I then entered daft horse drawing in the renewal of the international animals in art where it was selected as one of   50 to be displayed and won the  readers choice award (the highlight of my art career.

In keeping with the celebration the 50th anniversary of animal art on the JAVMA cover- JAVMArt Jubilee (50 yrs of cover art by the veterinary community) the art piece presented is the original pencil drawing of the dog “Ben” that was selected for cover art for the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association November 15, 2013, volume 243, number 10.

Looking Glass

Starting bid $500.00

By Dr. Michelle McCune

Description

Oil on canvas 8 x 8 inches

Growing up in the Midwest I was always fascinated by red foxes. This one was particularly taken with it’s own reflection! I love the circular movement in this piece and  how reflections are not simply mirror images but show an entirely different perspective, like all of the red leaves in the trees above the fox – pure magic!

I graduated from the University of Wisconsin – Madison School of Veterinary Medicine in 1996 and still practice small animal medicine part-time. The rest of my time is spent volunteering and in my studio. I am a docent at Ano Nuevo State Park in California where I educate people about the conservation and  facts about amazing elephant seals. I also volunteer as a research intern with Monterey Bay Whale Watch collecting crucial data which is used to help protect whales! I love to travel and support companies dedicated to environmental protection.

I have been published many times and received many awards and have been a proud member of the Artists for Conservation since 2008.

Starting bid $750.00

30 by 30 inches print on canvas by Dr. Ken Gorczyca

Description

I paint portraits of nature and animals and especially enjoy capturing wildlife and human-animal companionship. Both brush and knife help craft thick textures of built-up acrylic paint. My paintings are sculpted from my experiences from veterinary anatomy and the love of clouds and the elements. Bright colors and deep shadows are important to me. Painting nature has allowed me to explore color, light and shape, which easily morph into my fascination of animal form and gesture. I enjoy painting outdoors, en plein air style, while sitting directly on the earth directly. I believe that the Earth herself is alive, so art captures Gaia herself with all of her antics, motion and beauty. My paintings have a certain physicality, which allows for a dynamic approach to the models and scenes from which I work.

This image was featured on the December 1, 2021 cover of JAVMA and featured in the 2022 international art show Extraction: Art on the Edge the Abyss. The original painting was the showcase piece at my first solo art show, Portraits of Gaia, in Prescott, Arizona at the Natural History Institute Art Gallery from October 2022 to January 2023. This auction piece is a scanned canvas print, framed and signed and is the same size, color and detail as the original acrylic painting (30”by 30”).
