Maine People’s Alliance rallies outside of Aetna

On Wednesday, about a dozen health care advocates, activists and directly impacted people rallied outside the offices of Aetna Health Insurance's office on Marginal Way in Portland.Participants marched with signs and shared stories of Mainers who have say they are bogged down with debt due to high deductibles and denied insurance claims. Protestors sent a letter to Aetna with demands including coverage for all treatment recommended by medical professionals and more transparency around claims denials. Organizers say they are not protesting Aetna specifically, but say it is an example of a private insurer in Maine. The Executive Communications Director for Aetna released a statement, saying, “We believe that every American should have access to affordable, high quality health coverage.” They say part of the solution would mean strengthening Medicare and Medicaid and making more affordable the individual health insurance market to serve consumers who do not have access to employer-sponsored coverage.
