Calling It Out

Q+A kicks off for 2021 with a panel of eminent Australians joining host Hamish Macdonald live from Sydney. They debate some of the current issues likely to shape the year ahead.

What now for Australia with a new Biden presidency? Will we feel the reverberations of lingering Trumpism here? How has the Australia Day debate impacted race relations? Plus we hear directly from our new Australian of the Year who’s pledged to dismantle the system of grooming used by sexual predators.

Discuss the Questions

Here are the questions our panel faced this week. You can discuss their answers on the Q+A Facebook Page.

MISINFORMATION AND CRAIG KELLY

(1:02)

Rebecca Green asked: It was hard to watch Craig Kelly barking untrue accusations and conspiracy theories at Tanya Plibersek in the halls of Parliament House. How can we respond to manipulative misinformation from politicians, and in turn our fellow citizens, now that we have seen the mayhem in the US Capitol building unleashed by Donald Trump's discourse?

RUSSIAN INTERFERENCE

(12:28)

Anne Matheson asked: Alexander Downer, you played a vital role in exposing Russian interference in the US election. As a VIP whistleblower, did you experience any backlash?

MESSAGE FROM A SURVIVOR

(17:55)

Susan Dekker had a message for Grace Tame: Dearest Grace. Thank you for your work, so long overdue. I am 73 years old and still bear the scars of sexual abuse by my stepfather - not on my body but on my mind and in my heart. Bless you for speaking out on my behalf after a lifetime of pain.

SPEAKING OUT

(33:25)

Jane Matts asked: As a survivor and advocate in the DV space I work in so many systems that silence victims, Family Court being one of them. Grace Tame - how shocked were you when you first realised that the court system made it impossible to speak out about your abuse and what steps must survivors take to be heard?

RACISM IN AFL

(52:01)

Richard Bentley asked: My question is to Tanya Hosch. Should the AFL take a more prominent role in helping the clubs deal with racism and in setting a path forward. Clearly being humble does not seem to be part of leading an AFL club. I would like to see Colin Kaepernick, Nicky Winmar, Robby Muir and Heritier Lumumba at the MCG Grand Final coin toss this year. Sometimes pictures are more powerful than words.

CHANGE THE DATE

(1:01:06)

Tim Schroder asked: Will we ever get over the Australia Day argument, unless it’s changed?

USA INFLUENCING OUR CLIMATE POLICY?

(1:06:04)

Ian Duffy asked: With Biden now the POTUS and his strong views and policies directed towards working towards climate-change targets, will this be the influence and tipping point for our own Liberal Government, to change their policies?
