In 2022, the Center for Freethought Equality commissioned a poll that revealed an increasing inclination among voters to support atheist and humanist candidates. In addition, the survey demonstrated that voters prioritize factors beyond religious beliefs, favoring candidates based on other political concerns. For more information, you can consult our candidate guide.

Take the initiative to get to know these elected officials. Invite them to speak at your meetings and discuss relevant issues and legislation. Furthermore, consider joining their ranks by running for public office yourself!

Federal Elected Officials

California

Jared Huffman, U.S. House of Representatives (CD-2), office website. Rep. Huffman is a humanist and agnostic. He was re-elected in 2022 to a two-year term. This is his sixth term. Huffman is the founder and co-chair of the Congressional Freethought Caucus.

Maryland

Jamie Raskin, U.S. House of Representatives (CD-8), office website. Although he is “emphatically Jewish,” Congressman Raskin has repeatedly identified himself as a “humanist” and told the Washington Post that humanism is his philosophy.“I’ve always described myself as a humanist, because I think it’s the greatest philosophical movement in human history. Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Paine, Benjamin Franklin, Albert Einstein, they’re my heroes. … I believe that there are humanists of every religious stripe.” Raskin won election to Congress in 2016 after serving a decade in the Maryland State Senate where he was Majority Whip. He won re-election in 2022 and is serving in his fourth term. Raskin is a co-chair of the Congressional Freethought Caucus.

Former Elected Officials

Pete Stark, a member of Congress from 1973 to 2013, was the first U.S. Representative to publicly identify with the nontheist community. In a 2007 press release Stark said, "When the Secular Coalition [of America] asked me to complete a survey on my religious beliefs, I indicated I am a Unitarian who does not believe in a supreme being. Like our nation's founders, I strongly support the separation of church and state. I look forward to working with the Secular Coalition to stop the promotion of narrow religious beliefs in science, marriage contracts, the military and the provision of social services." He was awarded the 2008 Humanist of the Year by the American Humanist Association.

Ernie Chambers was a member of the Nebraska State Senate (District 11) from 1971 to 2009 and from 2013 to 2020. He is the longest serving member of the Nebraska State Senate, and was the plaintiff in the U.S. Supreme Court case Marsh v. Chambers (1983) that unsuccessfully sought to make government paid legislative chaplains unconstitutional. Ernie Chambers received the American Humanist Association's Lifetime Achievement Award at their 75th Anniversary Conference in Chicago in 2016.

Chris Balch was a member of the New Hampshire House of Representatives (Hillsborough District 38) from 2018 to 2020.

Jeff Barker was a member of the Oregon House of Representatives (District 28) from 2003 to 2021.

Christy Bartlett was a member of the New Hampshire House of Representatives (Merrimack District 19) from 2012 to 2022.

John Bordenet was a member of the New Hampshire House of Representatives (Cheshire District 5) from 2014 to 2022.

Cecil Bothwell was a member of the Asheville (North Carolina) City Council from 2009 to 2017.

Andrew Bouldin was a member of the New Hampshire House of Representatives from 2018 to 2022.
