Field Trips and Tours

In addition to onstage programming, Aspen Ideas: Climate offers exclusive and curated tours (advanced sign-up required) for passholders to learn more about climate change mitigation and adaptation. These tours have limited capacity, and registered passholders will be notified when sign-ups are open.

Members of the public can also enjoy exhibits and activities in and around the City of Miami Beach during Aspen Ideas: Climate. Select museums, galleries, and organizations offer exciting and immersive opportunities to learn more about our changing climate and reflect on ways we can be part of the solution to protect and save our planet.

ASPEN IDEAS: CLIMATE
VISUAL ART, FILM and PERFORMANCE

In conjunction with the Aspen Ideas: Climate conference taking place on Miami Beach May 9-12, 2022 the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and City of Miami Beach will present a series of temporary site specific public art commissions, film screenings, and performances highlighting issues related to climate change and sea level rise. Fifteen (15) Miami-based artists will present work, including visual artists Franky Cruz, Cara Despain, Morel Doucet, Brookhart Jonquil, Michele Oka Doner and Lauren Shapiro. Performances and will include works by artists Dale Andree, Brigid Baker, Michelle Grant-Murray, and an audio-work by Gustavo Matamoros. The film program will include artists A.S.T. (Alliance of the Southern Triangle), Dale Andree, Domingo Castillo, Coralmorphologic, Hattie Mae Williams, and Lee Pivnik. In addition, The City of Miami Beach will also highlight works from their permanent public art collection with thematically related commissions by Bill Fontana and Ellen Harvey.

Lowe Art Museum: Cities Underwater
Norwood Viviano’s Cities Underwater exhibit. The project visualizes the dramatic loss of land in the next 500 years in areas 100+ millions of Americans call home. The adaptation needed to mitigate the impending changes is massive. The exhibit aims to draw people’s attention to this predicted outcome future generations will face. Free general admission tickets must be reserved in advance here. Open Thursdays-Saturdays from 10am-4pm.

Lowe Art Museum: Coral City Camera
Coral City Camera: A Hybridization of Art, Technology, and Science, a multimedia work and research tool by artist-scientist duo Coral Morphologic and presented by Bas Fisher Invitational (BFI) and Bridge Initiative. Submerged alongside PortMiami, the Coral City Camera reveals the surprising diversity of pioneering coral reef organisms that call Miami home. Free general admission tickets must be reserved in advance here. Open Thursdays-Saturdays from 10am-4pm.

Bass Museum
Abraham Cruzvillegas’ Agua Dulce sculptural installation, featuring 23 different species and more than 1,000 plants to create a plant environment in front of the museum, free for the public to enjoy. Open Daily.

Miami Beach Botanical Garden Self-Guided Tour
Located next to the Miami Beach Convention Center, the Miami Beach Botanical Garden is a lush three-acre tropical oasis in the heart of Miami Beach, showcasing hundreds of palm species, native plants, and orchids. Explore the different types of palms in the Palm Garden, wander through the serene Japanese garden showcasing an iconic red bridge and lantern pagodas, or marvel at the wildlife which call the Garden home. Self-guided audio tours (QR codes around the Garden can be scanned using a mobile device) are available, and a garden map is accessible at the main entrance and welcome center. Free general admission. Open Tuesdays-Sundays from 9am-5pm.

Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science
A masterpiece of living science, the three-level Aquarium carries you from the surface to the depths of South Florida's crucial aquatic ecosystems and beyond. With nearly 30 aquariums and interactive vessels in the Aquarium, visitors can experience the vibrant and diverse tropical sea. Tickets at $29.95. We recommend purchasing your ticket here in advance of your visit. Open daily from 10am-6pm.

Perez Art Museum Miami
Felice Grodin: Invasive Species
is an augmented reality exhibition by Miami-based artist Felice Grodin that can be viewed via the PAMM App which is available for free from the App Store on iPhone and iPad*. The series employs the technology of augmented reality, and is accessible to visitors using iOS devices in PAMM’s outdoor areas and in the Padma and Raj Vattikuti Learning Theater on the museum’s first floor. By drawing on the destructive impact of invasive species and creating new digital environments, Grodin highlights the transformative and unstable state of our ecosystem, speculating about a not-so-distant future affected by climate change and overtaken by uncanny creatures. Visitors must reserve timed tickets online ahead of visit. Tickets at $16. Open Thursdays 11am-9pm, Fridays-Sundays 11am-6pm.

Institute of Contemporary Art 
On view in the Sculpture Garden is Damian Ortega's 2019 work Replicant Stone. The large-scale bronze sculpture takes the form of a monumental, endlessly mutating crystal, representing a tension between science, technology and the natural world; and the human impulse to recreate the perfection of nature. Free general admission. We recommend reserving tickets for guaranteed entry. Guests who arrive without tickets may be unable to enter based on building capacity. Wednesdays-Sundays 11am-5pm.

With flow levels declining and nitrate pollution on the rise, the springs today bear the scars of a profound struggle. The Fellowship of the Springs takes viewers behind the scenes of the fight to save Florida's springs, from the halls of the state capitol in Tallahassee to the deep caves of Ichetucknee spring.

Plastic is the New Coal Cleanup

Pelican Harbor Seabird Station Tour

Pelican Harbor Seabird Station is dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and release of sick, injured or orphaned brown pelicans, seabirds, and other native wildlife. A guided 1-hour tour of Pelican Harbor Seabird Station Tour is ideal for bird enthusiasts and novices alike. Groups of all ages will enjoy seeing the native wildlife they rehabilitate and beautiful Biscayne Bay.

City of Miami Beach Resilience Tours
Guided tour of mitigation and adaptation efforts in Miami Beach. The tour will start in South Pointe Park and continue to Sunset Harbour, the blueprint neighborhood for sea-level rise climate change and sea-level rise adaptation. Limited capacity. Free. For passholders only.

University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science
An exclusive guided tour of the Alfred C. Gassell, Jr. SUSTAIN Laboratory  wind-wave tank which can generate Category 5 hurricane force winds. SUSTAIN, which stands for SUrge-STructure-Atmospherie-INteraction, provides scientists and engineers access to critical observations within a realistic but controlled environment to study the impacts of hurricane and storm surge events on coastal communities. Followed by a guided tour of the Coral Reef Futures Lab to learn about the biology, ecology, and conservation of local reefs and the impacts of ongoing climate change on these ecosystems. Limited capacity. Florida International University’s College of Engineering and Computing
An exclusive guided tour of the newly-launched FIU-FPL microgrid and control room to help advance research on renewable energy, and the Wall of Wind facility to enable research on mitigating the impacts of hurricanes on the built environment. Limited capacity. Free. For passholders only.

Snorkel Cleanup
Debris Free Oceans and Ocean Conservancy will host groups on SCUBA and snorkel adventures to clean up the coral reefs off the shores of Miami and Key Largo. Participants will receive thorough education on the safe removal of marine debris from our reefs, ensuring the reefs are left better than how they are found.  Limited capacity. Free. For passholders only.

Abraham Cruzvillegas’ Agua Dulce sculptural installation
Extending from Collins Avenue along the central promenade of the park leading up to the museum entrance, Agua dulce, a large-scale sculptural installation, encompasses nearly 14,000 square feet. Utilizing numerous species of flora, fauna and mineral; performers mimicking native birds; and seating that the artist constructed with locally sourced materials, Agua dulce forms a plant environment in front of the museum, free for the public to enjoy. Through collaborative research with local experts on native flora, Cruzvillegas selected around 23 different species to create the installation of more than 1,000 plants. Many of the included species, like the Salix Caroliniana (Coastal Plain Willow), have medicinal properties and are regularly used by the Seminoles, introducing notions of care and restoration to the installation. Limited capacity. The Underline
The Underline
 is transforming the land below Miami’s metrorail into a 10-mile linear park, urban trail and public art destination. While the project is expected to be completed in 2025, passholders will experience a guided tour of Phase 1 which is now open to the public and includes the River Room, The Promenade, the Urban Gym, and the Oolite Room. Limited capacity. Free. For passholders only
