Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA)

Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA) affects Equidae and is caused by an equid-specific lentivirus in the retrovirus family: equine infectious anemia virus (EIAV). Although the majority of persistent infections appear to result in minimal clinical signs, EIA may be seen in epizootic form with high morbidity and mortality.

EIA Testing - There’s an App for That!

CDA's Animal Health Lab (CDAAHL) runs ELISA and AGID EIA testing and has a newly developed EIA Mobile Application for submitting Coggins tests.

The CDAAHL started using USALIMS, a Computer Aid Incorporated lab information management system, in March 2015 and was the first lab in the country to offer the USALIMS Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA) mobile application in April 2017.

The application allows veterinarians to collect the information in the field and enter it directly into the app on their mobile devices, as well as take pictures of the horses for the EIA form. The app then submits the form to your participating laboratory.

The mobile EIA application will soon be available for use at Colorado State University and is now being used by laboratories in Pennsylvania and Florida as well. These institutions are also working on development of a generic application that will help veterinarians submit samples for Bovine Viral Diarrhea, Johne’s, Trichomoniasis, and other diseases.

To get the app: Visit the App store or Play store to download “USALIMS”. Once downloaded, call the CDAAHL to request a username and password.

Please note: This app is currently only for submitting equine serum samples to CDAAHL for EIA testing. If using another laboratory, call that laboratory to inquire if they will be using the new EIA mobile app.
