Wiley Partners with DeepGreen Project to Enhance Open Access in Germany

09/29/2020

Collaboration automates distribution of data published by Wiley under Projekt DEAL to German open access repositories

Hoboken, N.J and Munich, Germany—September 29, 2020— John Wiley and Sons Inc. (NYSE:JWa) (NYSE:JWb) and the open access project DeepGreen signed a collaboration agreement to distribute research published under the Wiley/Projekt DEAL agreement to open access repositories throughout Germany.

Starting today, more than 500 German academic institutions participating in Projekt DEAL can automatically receive full text PDF and metadata of the articles published under the agreement via the DeepGreen router. The first of the planned semi-annual data deliveries contains all 2019 approved open access articles published under the Wiley/Projekt DEAL agreement. These and subsequent deliveries are limited to those member institutions who have signed up to Projekt DEAL.

The DeepGreen project, which has been in existence since 2016 and is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), aims to promote open access transformation by automating the delivery of full-text and metadata of scientific publications to institutional and subject-specific open access repositories.

“We are thrilled to start cooperating with Wiley,” said Beate Rusch, head of the DeepGreen project. “This collaboration will help a large number of repositories which are at the moment manually indexing Wiley journal articles one by one.”

Wiley and Projekt DEAL signed a landmark agreement in January 2019—the first nationwide open access deal in Germany. Initiated by the Alliance of German Science Organizations, corresponding authors from more than 800 Projekt DEAL institutions may publish their primary research and review articles open access in more than 1,600 Wiley journals, retaining copyright of their works and access to content from Wiley’s entire journals portfolio.

“We’re very pleased that Wiley and DeepGreen can make open access content published under the Projekt DEAL agreement easily available to each institution in Germany,” said Dr. Guido F. Herrmann, VP and Managing Director, Wiley-VCH GmbH. “This is just one example of the advantages of open access, in which institutions get to showcase and keep a permanent record of their institution’s research for everyone to use directly from their repository.”

Using a matching process, the DeepGreen router automatically allocates research papers to the institutions of their origin from hybrid and gold open access journals. The cooperation between Wiley and DeepGreen covers all years of the DEAL agreement from 2019 to 2021. The cooperation between Wiley and DeepGreen was established in close coordination with the MPDL Services GmbH who is representing Projekt DEAL as the operating entity of the agreement.
