City of Tampa Juneteenth Flag Raising Ceremony & Festival

Join them for the 4th Annual Juneteenth Flag Raising Ceremony & Festival which will begin with a flag raising ceremony at City Hall followed by a festival at Lykes Gaslight Square Park. Come ready to share your oral histories to be documented as part of our Soul Walk project.

THE FLYING ACE will be a FREE “Film Tampa Bay Presents” screening in celebration of Juneteenth. The film – directed by Richard E. Norman and produced by Norman Studios in Jacksonville, FL – features an all-Black cast and tells the story of the dastardly pilot Finley Tucker and the object of his affection, Ruth Sawtelle, who is said to be (very) loosely based on aviator Bessie Coleman.

Freedom finally came on June 19, 1865, when some 2,000 Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas. The army announced that the more than 250,000 enslaved black people in the state were free by executive decree. This day came to be known as “Juneteenth” by the newly freed people in Texas. The History Center’s latest permanent exhibit, Travails and Triumphs, chronicles over 500 years of Black history in the Tampa Bay area.
