WATCH: Young Girl, Police Save Swan Trapped In Nassau Storm Drain

The young girl first heard the swan's cries for help. Officers and wildlife experts were able to get it free.

MERRICK, NY — A keen-eared young girl led to the rescue of a swan that was stuck in a storm drain in Merrick Wednesday morning.

According to Nassau County police, a 5-year-old girl was playing near her home on Lake End Road around 10:30 a.m. when she heard a strange noise coming from a nearby storm drain. She went over and found that a swan was trapped inside.

The girl quickly told her father, who called police. Officers responded and saw that the swan was trapped and in distress. The officers called the Emergency Service Unit to respond. They also knew of two licensed wildlife rehabilitators in the area, and called them for assistance.

With the help of the Emergency Services officer, the storm drain cover was lifted, and the wildlife rehabilitators were able to safely remove the swan. It is currently under evaluation, but appeared to be uninjured.
