Do you have questions? We have answers.

Extension is your connection to Virginia’s land-grant universities: Virginia Tech and Virginia State University and provide unbiased, objective, research-based information and educational programs to individuals, families, organizations, and communities. We can answer questions on a variety of topics including gardening, horticulture, 4-H, families, childcare, managing money, forestry, natural resources, and many more!

Join SMART Scapes Today!

The Henrico County office of Virginia Cooperative Extension is enrolling residents in SMART Scapes, a program that helps you to assess your home landscape for problems; instruct on proper planting, pruning, and mulching techniques; and how to select the right plant for the right spot. For a $10 fee, Master Gardener volunteers will visit a home, analyze the landscape and prepare a reference folder customized for your landscape, which will include a map of your property, fact sheets on current plantings, general gardening information for our area, and more. The SMART Scapes program follows the concepts of SMART — Soil test, Match Plants to Site, Arranging Plants, Rain and Irrigation and Trouble-free maintenance, which emphasize best management practices for a beautiful, healthy and sustainable landscape. Please note that turf grasses will not be addressed in this program. Registration for the program starts April 1st through September 30th, 2024.

Henrico 4-H Youth Development

The youth development education program of Virginia Cooperative Extension, 4-H is rich with learning experiences in which young people partner with caring adults and volunteers in a fellowship unlike any other program available to youth today. Through 4-H, young people are encouraged to participate in a variety of activities that emphasize 4-H’s “learning by doing” philosophy of youth development.  We bring research-based information from our land grant universities – Virginia Tech and Virginia State University – to the youth in our community.  The mission of 4-H is to develop leadership, citizenship, and life skills.

Last year, Henrico County 4-H had over 6,000 youth enrolled in 4-H programming and 175 youth and adult volunteers! Learn more…
