RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. - The University of Arkansas at Monticello men's basketball team fell in the final moments of overtime in a back and forth battle at Arkansas Tech. A foul on a rebound with under two seconds to play sealed the fate for the Weevils, falling 65-64.
UAM opened the contest with an 8-0 run in first six minutes of the game. ATU battled back to takes its first lead 12-11 with a 10-0 run of their own.
The two teams went back and forth in the final six minutes of the opening half with neither team holding more than a four point lead. UAM held the narrow edge at the break leading 24-23.
UAM never trailed in the second half with its largest lead reaching eight points, but the Weevils could not put Arkansas Tech away. The Weevils held a 54-47 lead with 4:06 to play until a 9-2 run by the Wonder Boys knotted thing up at 56.
Each team managed just one bucket in the final minute and a half of regulation to send the game into overtime tied at 58.
UAM fell behind in overtime for the first time since ATU held a 16-15 lead with 4:59 in the first half.
Lemmie Howard carried the load for the Weevils in the extra period with all six of UAM's points including a go-ahead bucket with 1:21 to play.
The 40th rebound on the night for Arkansas Tech proved to be the difference in the final seconds as it lead to a pair of made free throws to retake the lead with 1.6 seconds left. UAM was unable to get a final look at the basket, ultimately falling 65-64.
Dajuan Jones finished as the leading scorer with 21 points, including a perfect 10-of-10 from the charity stripe.
Miles Daniels tallied 14 points and Howard dropped in 12 points to join Jones in double digits.
Denzel McDuffey pulled down his second straight double digit rebound effort with 10 boards.
