As good as the early Rebus books

This review is mainly to counter the earlier one that complained that Rebus was not the main focus but that Malcolm Fox was. Rebus is retired which means that he can no longer be the person in charge of solving a crime. He can still get involved though and he does that throughout the book. Malcolm Fox is just one of the police detectives with a large role in solving the case and Siobhan Clarke has at least as much involvement in the case (and in the book in terms of number of pages) as Malcolm Fox. In addition a new police detective based in Inverness is heavily involved in the case. So, in conclusion, while this is no longer a Rebus book as the leading police figure, it IS a book where Rebus is heavily involved as is his former close colleague Siobhan Clarke. The writing of Ian Rankin is just as good as in Rebus’s prime and the book is NOT ”just another book”. If it were I wouldn’t have spent most of the afternoon and evening (after collecting it from the library in the morning) reading it from cover to cover.

Really quite disappointing. Rebus is not the main focus, more so on Malcolm. Rebus is the much beloved character of his books and if he is not featured as forefront, the book is just another book.
