The Four Winds

by Patron51574, Parma, Ohio on 02-24-2021

I'm a huge fan of Kristen Hannah and have read most of her books and enjoyed each one. While this novel was well written and historically significant, it was the most depressing book I've ever read. If you're looking for something uplifting to read, I suggest you select another title.

Four Winds / Kristin Hannah

by Reviewer161786, Auckland, New Zealand on 04-24-2021

This story about the turbulent times in Texas during the 30's and how ordinary folk were treated as Migrants who went to California beggars belief. It is a heart rending story about a young lady who went in search of a better life. The quality of writing by Kristin Hannah is superb. Having read most of her books, this one is certainly up there with the best. A real page turner right to the finish.

Summary
"An epic novel of love and heroism and hope, set against the backdrop of one of America's most defining eras--the Great Depression. Texas, 1934. Millions are out of work and a drought has broken the Great Plains. Farmers are fighting to keep their land and their livelihoods as the crops are failing, the water is drying up, and dust threatens to bury them all. One of the darkest periods of the Great Depression, the Dust Bowl era, has arrived with a vengeance. In this uncertain and dangerous time, Elsa Martinelli--like so many of her neighbors--must make an agonizing choice: fight for the land she loves or go west, to California, in search of a better life. The Four Winds is an indelible portrait of America and the American Dream, as seen through the eyes of one indomitable woman whose courage and sacrifice will come to define a generation"-- Provided by publisher.
