Computer Information Systems Major

Computing and its applications are all around us. When you major in computer information systems, you'll merge technology with business to help shape the future of our society. You may become an application or web developer or enter the workforce as a high-tech start-up entrepreneur. With required courses in data science, business and finance, you'll graduate ready to work.

Why study computer information systems at the College of Charleston? 

Charleston is home to high-tech startups, entrepreneurs and creatives. Computer information systems puts you in the middle of the mix. At the College, you'll have access to the Student Innovation Center, which includes a makerspace, a virtual reality room, 3D printers and more. The School of Sciences, Mathematics, and Engineering can connect you with local companies like Boeing, Benefitfocus and Bosch.

What will I learn? 

In this program, you'll study object-oriented programming languages. You'll build skills in teamwork, business application and web development. You'll develop a working knowledge of databases and software and information systems. You connect these skills with business and entrepreneurship theories and practices.

  • Hands-on Learning
    Research

    The College has seven research labs on campus to complement coursework. We mix hands-on laboratory experiences with theoretical coursework. The result: a personalized educational experience with many opportunities to participate in undergraduate research with your professors. 

    Internship Opportunities

    We help you network and make connections with industry representatives. You'll develop strong connections with global brands such as well as government agencies and local industry. Computer information systems students also enjoy internship opportunities through the School of Business.

     Study Abroad 

    Along with the Department of Hispanic Studies, we co-sponsor a study abroad opportunity in Trujillo, Spain. Spend your summer practicing your Spanish and computer science skills.

  • Senior Project

    This semester-long senior capstone enables you to synthesize what you have learned. You'll have input and guidance from an industry client and a faculty supervisor. Once you complete the capstone, you'll have a project to showcase to future employers!

  • Location

    With more than 400 tech companies in the region, there are numerous opportunities to engage. That's why they call Charleston the Silicon Harbor. Aerospace, automotive, logistics and software/IT jobs dominate the region.

Careers & Outcomes


Computer and mathematics occupations are in demand - and projected to increase 17 percent in the next 10 years. In the southeast, jobs in this field are expected to increase 18 percent in the next 10 years. Recent graduates find employement as: 

  • applications or web developer.
  • systems analyst.
  • database adminstrator.

You'll also be prepared for the high-tech start-up industry or to continue your studies in graduate school. 

About the Minor


If you're looking to build a foundation in information technology, this minor is for you! Proficiency in web programming languages, data management and data security will add important skills to your résumé.
