Neuroscience Minor

Understand how the brain and the central nervous system impact human behavior.

PET scans, MRIs and EEGs - you've heard them mentioned in movies and TV shows, and you know they're essential tools in medicine used to study brain function. But how do the brain and nervous system actually work? That question is the principal concern of neuroscience.

What will I learn?

At the College, neuroscience is part biology and part psychology. You will also learn from subjects such as physics, anthropology, philosophy, chemistry, computer science and discovery informatics. You will gain a full-spectrum understanding of how the brain and nervous system influence behavior. Take an interdisciplinary approach at topics such as these:
  • Comparative Neuroscience – Differences and similarities among the brains of humans and other animals
  • Neuroplasticity - How the brain changes with learning and experience.
  • Neuroendocrinology- Interaction between hormones and the brain.
  • Neuroanatomy -Circuitry and interconnectivity in the brain.
  • Neurophysiology and Computational Modeling- How neurons communicate.
  • Neuroethology - The relationship between brain and behavior in nonhuman animals.

Program Highlights

We are one of only three neuroscience programs offered in South Carolina. Our program takes a comparative approach to understanding brain-behavior relationships. You will get a solid foundation for neuroscience-related careers.
  • Hands-On Learning

We champion undergraduate research. You will have the opportunity to work with faculty on your research projects.

Our location affords us unique collaborative opportunities with the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) just blocks away.

  • Careers & Outcomes

Our students are more competitive applicants to academic and professional programs, including medical and nursing school. You don’t have to become a medical professional to benefit.

Our students are more competitive applicants to academic and professional programs in neuroscience and related fields including medical, veterinary, and nursing school, as well as other allied health professions.
Additionally, a neuroscience minor can be an advantage anyone who plans to pursue a career in:
    • education.
    • social work.
    • forensics.
    • marketing.
