Master Watershed Steward Program
About the Program
This program provides extensive training in watershed management to volunteers who, in return, educate the community about watershed stewardship based on university research and recommendations.
The Penn State Master Watershed Steward program was established to strengthen local capacity for management and protection of watersheds, streams, and rivers, by educating and empowering volunteers across the commonwealth.

Master Watershed Stewards Plant Native Meadow in Indiana County, Pennsylvania
The Master Watershed Steward Program of Westmoreland, Indiana, and Armstrong Counties in Pennsylvania worked with the Watershed Coalition of the Lehigh Valley on a 2022 GIANT Healing the Planet Grant in order to convert a half-acre lawn to a native wildflower meadow. This project took place at the Indiana County Technology Center where the native meadow will provide many water quality and habitat benefits.

Native Plant Installation at Smedley Park Clean Water Basin
Penn State Extension Master Watershed Stewards and Master Gardeners, Delaware County Conservation District, and Delaware County Park and Recreation have collaborated on enhancement projects in Smedley Park for several years, including the recent planting of a stormwater detention basin planted by staff, Extension volunteers, and the public in honor of Earth Day on April 22nd, 2023.

Master Watershed Steward Jim Walter Inspires Environmental Action
Jim Walter, a retired chemical engineer, was part of the first Bucks County Master Watershed Steward training class in 2015. He since has taken on a leadership role in the program.
