The US equine industry contributes to the economy in a crucial way. Horse farming brings its own set of rewards and requires a certain amount of time, money and education. Nevertheless, running a horse farm is a worthwhile experience whether you’re in Pennsylvania or any other US state.

Owning and Caring for Horses

Raising horses comes with its own set of unique challenges, and there are certain basic needs you have to address as a horse farm owner.

Anyone looking to explore the equestrian niche, or those who already run an equine barn, need to be able to provide adequate and appropriate care. Knowing where to look for that information can be challenging when there’s so much available. Here at Penn State Extension, we want to provide a one-stop-shop for both professional and amateur horse owners.

Knowing what to do when a horse falls ill or becomes injured is crucial. A certain amount of company for the equines in your care is also of the utmost importance. You’ll also be given the tools you need to be able to provide adequate and appropriate exercise, feed and shelter.

The equine industry is made up of a wide selection of horse raising devotees, each running or responsible for their own horse farming establishments. We’re able to provide tailor-made advice whether you’re the owner of a horse boarding stable, horse breeding farm, or performance-horse facility.

Key subjects to learn about include rotational grazing, pasture renovation, weed and toxic plant management, fencing stream corridors, managing water flow, planning a horse boarding operation and much more.

If you’re a new horse farming owner, the Equine Environmental Stewardship short course will give you all the tools you need.
