Author Juan Ochoa

Join us in-person in F102 or online through Zoom Webinar for this reading by STC faculty and author Juan Ochoa from his newest book. Pa’l Otro Lado, a prequel to Mariguano, spans five generations of violence and tragedy in the Cortina family while narrating their forced migration to the United States from Northern Mexico. It is the tale of every working-class family who has come to realize that “you just can’t win.” Hunger and poverty drive the characters in this novel to abandon all hopes of attaining the American Dream and to resign themselves simply to survive. P’al Otro Lado is full of the baddest hombres and the nastiest women we all know, love, and call family.

Family Reading Night 2023

Family Reading Night

Your local South Texas College Mid-Valley Campus Library will be hosting their annual “Family Reading Night” event which will take place on Wednesday, October 18, 2023, from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. in our library E1.200.  This free event, which is open to the public, is held in conjunction with Reading Week.

“We want to help children develop a love of reading and to encourage Valley parents to read with their children,” said Lillian Carrillo, Mid-Valley Campus Librarian. “Our college’s libraries are a gateway to the community, and we hope that participants will not only take advantage of these fun activities, but also learn more about some of the great services that the college has to offer.”

The night’s festivities include a book distribution by South Texas Literacy Coalition, a variety of arts and crafts activities for the entire family offered by The Storybook Garden, The Weslaco Museum and Mayor Joe V. Sánchez Public Library.  As an added bonus, fun opportunities will be featured by several of our STC college departments and clubs with a special visit from non-other than Jerry the Jaguar.

While on campus, attendees have the opportunity to use the library’s free services, view artwork on display in the Library Art Gallery, or anyone 18 years or older may sign up for a Community User Card, which allows community members to check out books at any of STC’s libraries for free.

The library is located in Building E1.200 at 400 N. Border in Weslaco. For more information about the event contact Lillian Carrillo at 956-447-6663.
