Applications open to actors, singers, dancers

The Ordway's GreenRoom is a paid, intensive training fellowship created by BIPOC artists to center and uplift underrepresented communities within musical theater. Led by Ordway Director of Arts, Learning, and Community Engagement Maia Maiden, the educational program is open to Minnesota actors, dancers, and singers who are 18 years and older and interested in expanding their performing arts skills into musical theater. Throughout the six-week program, 10 selected fellowship positions combine collaborative, experiential learning with 1-on-1 mentoring and coaching.

Eligibility guidelines

In order to be considered for GreenRoom, fellowship applicants must:

  • Be 18 years or older

  • Be based in Minnesota

  • Be an actor, singer, and/or dancer

  • Be able to demonstrate a commitment to the performing arts

  • Have proficiency in at least one of the three disciplines

  • Have less than 3 years experience as a professional musical theater performer beyond high school/college

  • Be able to commit to duration of the program

Our intention is to create a learning environment that is empowering and supportive to instill the confidence, understanding, and skills necessary to excel in the challenging and rewarding field of musical theater.

In addition to the eligibility guidelines, interested applicants should:

  • Have a desire to learn and positive attitude

  • Be open minded and focused

  • Be willing to receive and respond to feedback

  • Be able to collaborate and support others

  • Be willing to make mistakes and bold choices

What does "BIPOC" mean?

Black, Indigenous, Person of Color

We use this term to mean that we seek to serve artists of color who identify as: Black/African/African American, Indigenous, American Indian, Native, Native American, Afro Latino/a/x, Caribbean, Chicano/a/x, Mexican, Central American, South American, Middle Eastern/North African, Southeast Asian/Asian, Pacific Islander/Native Hawaiian, Native Alaskan.

We recognize that these descriptions and this language is ever-evolving and will always be inadequate. Our fellowship seeks to uplift artistic communities who have been historically underrepresented in musical theater. If this description resonates with you, we invite you to apply.

What does “based in Minnesota” mean?

Currently living in Minnesota. This includes college students whose primary residence is Minnesota, but attend college in another state.

What does “able to demonstrate commitment to performing arts and proficiency” mean?

Performance experience and/or training in your discipline area (acting, singing, and/or dancing). This includes but is not limited to: classes, workshops, and performances in community spaces, professional theaters, schools, various venues, churches, etc.

What does “experience as a professional musical theater performer” mean?

Been a part of a book musical production process. A book musical is a musical play where songs and dance/movement are fully integrated into the story.

I see this fellowship is for participants 18 years or older. Is there an age limit or age focus?

This fellowship is meant to be intergenerational. If you are older than 18, we encourage you to apply!

Will this fellowship be in person or virtual?

This fellowship will take place in person at the Ordway Center for the Performing Arts. Fellows will follow the same COVID-19 protocols as our production team. These protocols continue to be monitored for reevaluation and are subject to change.

How many fellows will be selected?

Ten fellows will be selected.

I was a fellow in the previous years; can I apply to be a fellow again?

Previous fellows are ineligible for reapplication at this time.
