Washington, D.C. — In response to the passage of Senate Joint Resolution 14 (S.J.Res.14), the Congressional Review Act Resolution of Disapproval of the Environmental Protection Agency’s rule to roll back the 2016 methane standards for new and modified sources in the oil and gas industry, through the Senate, the League of Conservation Voters (LCV) issued the following statement from Deputy Legislative Director Madeleine Foote:

“Thanks to the leadership of Majority Leader Schumer and Senator Heinrich and support from a bipartisan coalition of Senators today we are one step closer to protecting our communities and environment from toxic methane — the dangerous, potent greenhouse gas responsible for about 25 percent of the climate change we are experiencing today. This vote paves the way for the EPA to move forward with widely supported, sensible safeguards for methane and other air pollution from oil and gas production that would go a long way towards dismantling environmental racism and improving public health.

“Senators who voted no on this resolution sided with polluter CEOs over the health and well being of their constituents. The House must take swift action to get bipartisan regulation of the oil and gas industry back on track.”
