Cornell has developed the first variety of spring malting barley designed to succeed in New York’s wet climate and support the state’s $5 billion craft beer industry. All it needs now is a name.
Update: Submissions for the contest are currently closed. Join the virtual Empire State Barley and Malt Summit on 12/16 to hear the winner announced by Commissioner Richard Ball, NYS Agriculture and Markets.
Why malt matters:
Malted barley — also called malt — is the preferred grain for making beer. In its most basic form, it's barley grain that has been allowed to germinate by soaking in water, a process that prepares starches to be converted into fermentable sugars. Malting is a critical, but definitely lesser known step in the celebrated pastime of craft beer brewing.
