Camp Description

Children and adults with disabilities ranging in age from 12-25 in the Tulsa Metro area will benefit from a four-day visual arts summer camp at no cost. Teachers will provide a specialized curriculum utilizing an arts integration program where students will get to display their artwork at the end of the camp during a gallery walk through on the NSU Broken Arrow campus.

During the first 3 days of camp participants will attend for a half day hands-on arts based experiences workshop allowing instructors to teach two classes in the morning for participants 12-17 and two classes in the afternoon for participants 18-25. Students will learn through direct instruction, hands-on activities, and guided practice that focus on visual arts concepts such as creating dance maps, narrating theatrical scenes, using music as text, creating observational artwork, and creating cultural collages. All visual arts lessons are aligned to the National Arts Standards as well as literacy, math, writing, social studies, and science content areas but will be presented on the participants achievement level while also encouraging each participant to unlock their own creativity. Every lesson is also culturally responsive that incorporates artwork, books, music and prompts that reflect a variety of cultures.

This camp is being put on free of charge thanks to a grant from the Oklahoma Arts Council. There will be a total of 40 spots available for those 12-17 and 40 spots available for those 18-25.

Date: June 12-14, 2024
