Dr. Harry Ing is the founder and President of Bubble Technology Industries (BTI). Started in 1988 and located in Chalk River, Canada, BTI is globally recognized for its expertise in the fields of radiation and explosives detection. With a multi-disciplinary staff of over 50 people, the company provides products, services, and contract R&D for over 400 customers in 25 countries, with key clients including the US Department of Homeland Security, US Department of Energy, the Canadian Department of National Defence, the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) and its international partners, multiple law enforcement agencies, and a wide range of other Canadian and NATO-country agencies. The company’s innovative technologies have flown on over two dozen space missions and have been used to secure high-profile events, including US Presidential inaugurations, visits by the Pope, global political summits, multiple Super Bowls, the World Series, and the Olympics.
Dr. Ing is a recognized subject matter expert in radiation detection and nuclear physics, with over 50 years of experience in radiation measurement techniques for all forms of ionizing radiation. Dr. Ing invented the unique “bubble detector” for the detection and measurement of neutron radiation in 1982. This started a new field of radiation detection based on superheated emulsions. The bubble detector is now used in more than 20 countries, has been bench-marked by scientific organizations as the most accurate personal neutron dosimeter available, was used in the response to both the Chernobyl and Fukushima nuclear incidents, and has been showcased at the Canadian Aviation and Space Museum and the Canadian Museum of Science and Technology.
Dr. Ing currently holds 20 patents for a variety of inventions relating to radiation detection and applications of radiation. He has published over 100 scientific papers in the open literature, has authored chapters in reference books and monographs, and has written numerous technical publications and reports for organizations such as the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the US National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements, and many other Canadian and international Government agencies.
Dr. Ing has been an invited lecturer at numerous universities and research institutes around the world. Recent activities include serving on the Board of Directors of the Canadian Light Source, a national center of excellence committed to advancing synchrotron science, and serving for over 30 years as the Canadian Chair of ISO (International Organization for Standards) Technical Committee 85 (for peaceful applications of nuclear technologies and the protection of individuals and the environment from ionizing radiations) Sub-Committee 2 (Advisory Group on Radiological Protection). He is a member of SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics, and serves on the SPIE Defense & Security Program Committee. At the request of the IAEA, he recently organized a meeting in Vienna on Modern Neutron Detection, which was attended by 42 world experts from 20 countries.
Dr. Ing is a member of the Health Physics Society and previously served as editor of the Health Physics journal and as a lecturer for the Professional Enrichment Program. He is also on the editorial board of Radiation Protection Dosimetry, a journal he helped to found. He has served as a scientific advisor on various programs for NASA, as well as the CSA. He has served as a Canadian member of the NATO Industrial Advisory Group, a high-level group of senior industrialists from NATO member countries, acting under the Conference of National Armaments Directors. He is also a past member of the Board of Management of TRIUMF, Canada’s national laboratory for particle and nuclear physics research.
Dr. Ing earned his Ph.D. in Nuclear Physics at the University of Toronto in 1969. Prior to founding BTI in 1988, Dr. Ing was a research scientist, manager, and senior research officer at the Atomic Energy of Canada Limited and was also an invited visiting scholar at Stanford University.
In 2020, Dr. Ing was awarded the Meritorious Service Cross, one of the highest honors in Canada, by the Governor General, for founding Bubble Technology Industries and advancing the field of radiation detection.
