Between 2019 and 2020, PGCMLS staff, the Board of Library Trustees, and community stakeholders engaged in a strategic planning process led by Margaret Sullivan Studio. The purpose of this effort was to examine how the community in Prince George's County utilizes the Library's resources, services, and spaces. The Strategic Framework 2021-2024 reflects the challenges and opportunities posed by the global events of 2020, demonstrating the central role in the life of Prince George's County. Staff and Margaret Sullivan Studio conducted one-on-one interviews with community members and stakeholders, conducted a system wide survey about how the Library should evolve its services, and participated in workshops to develop and envision the future direction for the Library. The results include a new mission, vision, and values for the Library, as well as a commitment to building relationships throughout the community to amplify all that PGCMLS offers community members as they strive to reach their potential at every stage of life.

The Strategic Framework establishes a new community-centric mission, vision, and values for the Library. It also demonstrates the Library's commitment to expanding services based on the community's evolving needs and the Prince George's County Proud Priorities established by County Executive Angela D. Alsobrooks. By outlining the Library's approach to envisioning its future, the Strategic Framework lays the foundation for the Library to develop a plan for setting goals and achieving success in all five strategic areas of focus. PGCMLS is deeply committed to reflecting community members' voices in all of its work and the Library offered a public comment period on this draft between March 30 and April 17, 2020.
