National Public Health Week 2024 | Semana Nacional de Salud Pública 2024 - April 1, 2024

It’s easy to forget the importance of public health in your day-to-day life. When public health is working effectively and running smoothly, it can be hard to notice. Naturally, public health gets the most attention when there are newsworthy emergencies and public health professionals are working to alleviate those concerns. But public health impacts your life every single day.

This year, National Public Health Week (NPHW), which is April 1-7, is meant to spotlight how vital public health’s continuous work is for the well-being of everyone. NPHW’s theme this year is “Protecting, Connecting and Thriving: We Are All Public Health.” Public health is more than preventing illness and responding to emergencies. It’s reducing pollution in the local environment and neighborhoods. It’s reducing foodborne illness and ensuring your water supply is safe. It’s the teamwork and relationships fostered in the community for the community. It’s all connected, and we, every one of us, are connected.

During NPHW, each day has a more specific theme:

  • Monday: Civic Engagement – Communities that vote more are healthier because their needs are better heard by policymakers.
  • Tuesday: Healthy Neighborhoods – Where you spend your time impacts your health. Are there safety hazards or pollution in your neighborhood? Heavy traffic? Access to cheap and healthy food?
  • Wednesday: Climate Change – Climate change is the most pressing threat to health. Dangerous weather is more common and overall warmer climates help many diseases spread.
  • Thursday: New Tools & Innovations – Technology is integral to health. Whether its emergency warning systems, new ways to test for diseases and toxic substances, or something else that hasn’t been invented yet.
  • Friday: Reproductive & Sexual Health – Access to reproductive and sexual healthcare and education allows people to live happier and healthier.
  • Saturday: Emergency Preparedness – Crises like floods and tornados develop quickly. Being prepared ahead of time and being informed as quickly as possible saves lives.
  • Sunday: The Future of Public Health – Since 2020, people are now more aware of disparities in health between different populations. We are finding new ways to bridge those gaps. Many people working within and outside of public health are reframing what public health means as a job and as a concept. The need for greater equity in health outcomes is pushing a lot of changes in the public health field.

Metro Region hospitals, health departments, and other non-profit agencies have asked Professional Research Consultants (PRC) to conduct a survey in our community beginning now through May 31, 2024.

This project is led by All Care Health Center, Charles Drew Health Center, CHI Health, Douglas County Health Department, Nebraska Medicine, Methodist Health System, OneWorld Community Health Center, Pottawattamie County Health Department, Sarpy/Cass Health Department, and The Wellbeing Partners, with the support of Professional Research Consultants.

Community members living in Pottawattamie County in Iowa or Cass, Douglas, and Sarpy counties in Nebraska are invited to participate in the 2024 Community Health Needs Assessment.

This assessment is a survey about things people in our community do which may affect their health. It helps us better understand the health needs and challenges in our region so we can work together to address them.

By participating in this assessment, community members contribute to shaping the future of health initiatives in the Metro Region.

There are two ways to participate and make your voice heard: Phone survey and online survey. Both are available in English and Spanish.

Online survey:

  • The survey is now available at prcsurvey.com/begin/MetroOmaha2024
  • IMPORTANT: Each respondent must take the survey by entering with the exact URL noted above.  You cannot copy and share the link from your web browser once a “survey session” has started and a unique session ID is assigned — this will result in an “expired” notice.
  • The online survey will take 25 minutes to complete.
  • Survey is available in both English and Spanish using the same URL/link.

Phone survey:

  • PRC is conducting phone surveys to a randomized sample of community members.
  • The survey will take approximately 20 minutes to complete.

You only need to take the survey once; if you have completed it via phone or online, do not take it again. This helps ensure we have accurate results.

Aja Anderson, CEO of The Wellbeing Partners, said “Collaboration drives community health improvement. Through completion of the survey, community members can inform and impact community health and health care delivery locally”.

Call to action:

  • Take the 2024 CHA survey yourself by May 31 at prcsurvey.com/begin/MetroOmaha2024
  • Encourage your friends, family, clients, networks, etc. to participate in the CHA survey.
