Event Details

Community members are invited to talk with the artists of the Blue-Eyed Knocker Photo Club at Argenta Branch Library while enjoying the exhibit during the next Argenta Third-Friday ArtWalk, from 5 to 8 p.m. on July 16. The exhibition continues in the library’s first-floor gallery with free admission 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays through Sept. 10.

A woman shows her large spider tattoo next to her baby bump; a small boy lounging on the back of a milk cow; and a girl in a white gown and graduation hat stands beneath a George Floyd graffiti painting: photographs in an upcoming exhibition at Argenta Branch Library feature the documentation of life from birth to death.

Inspired by the Museum of Modern Art’s Family of Man exhibition catalogue from 1955, which is the most commercially successful photobook ever published, members of the local Blue-Eyed Knocker group of photographers were motivated to assemble their best work documenting universal human conditions for the Humankind exhibit, according to Rita Henry, the group’s coordinator.

“Like the Family of Man, the pieces in Humankind span several decades with the majority of images produced in timeless black and white film and in the darkroom, similar to 1955 techniques along with digital images showing the color and shapes of 2021,” Henry said.

Like the original, Humankind includes a trio of writers, John Gibson, Penny Colglazier, and Susan Munden Allen, who offer their thoughts on the themes expressed in the photographs.

Photographers who contributed work to the show are: Adams Pryor, Adrienne Taylor, Brandon Markin, Casey Sanders, Cindy Adams, Darrell Adams, Gail Arnold, James Allen, Jon Hodges, Lily Ryall, Matt Weber, Nancy Nolan, Rachel Worthen, Rita Henry, Susan Crisp, and Vince Griffin.
