Southampton Hospital Designated the First East End Trauma III Center

Southampton, NY—The New York Department of Health has recognized Southampton Hospital as a provisional Level III adult trauma center, the first one on the East End, enabling the Hospital to provide care to the most critically injured patients. Faster treatment for trauma patients can mean the difference between life and death. During the summer season when the regional population swells, it is even more critically important that trauma care be accessible close by.

This certification is part of the necessary evolution of trauma care on Long Island. Southampton Hospital joins the NY Trauma System and the Suffolk Country Trauma System and will be the destination for Suffolk County EMS as well as local volunteer EMS groups. There are only five other hospitals in Suffolk County that are in the NYS trauma system. Depending on the severity of an injury, the Hospital may still be required to stabilize a patient before transferring to Stony Brook University Hospital, the regional Level I trauma center. Southampton Hospital’s trauma team includes Darin G. Wiggins MD, Chair of Emergency Medicine; Sampath Subramaniam MD, Trauma Center Director; and Katrin Diana RN, Trauma Center Coordinator. They, along with Fredric Weinbaum MD, EVP, CMO, COO, are to be congratulated on their work in accomplishing the Trauma III designation for Southampton Hospital.
