Wooden Room_Wedding Room, Hagar Masoud

  Wooden Room_Wedding Room is a socially engaged, multimedia installation project that addresses the traumatic impact of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). It sheds light on this violent practice, which involves the non-medical, ritual removal of external female genitalia, often without consent, and is widely seen as a patriarchal instrument to dominate girls' sexuality. FGM is prevalent across Africa, Asia, and the Middle East, rooted in cultural beliefs about femininity and marriageability.

  The project aims to raise awareness about the physical and emotional pain inflicted by FGM and advocate for its end, emphasizing the importance of protecting girls' bodily autonomy. Wooden Room_Wedding Room installation reimagines the colonialized interiors of Egyptian middle-class living rooms in a gallery setting, where narrators share their experiences of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) that occurred in such spaces. The ambiance includes serving Traditional Egyptian tea and tropical fruits while incorporating the scent of Betadine Feminine Wash.

  Hagar Masoud is a New York-based interdisciplinary artist and educator who draws from her Cairo, Egyptian roots to inform her work. Through her research-based art practice, Masoud investigates gentrification, childhood trauma, and collective memory, in forms of Gender-based violence, and perceptions of socially constructed roles. Masoud’s works attempt to transform the Occident narration of the Orient Culture and Women of Color, emphasizing the embedded violence and hate speech in the Occident. Masoud re-contextualizes socio-political commentary practice by adopting new media and oral history methodologies. Her practice incorporates sound art, installation, video and technology such as Artificial intelligence (AI), and extended reality.

Despite facing barriers and discrimination, women have persistently contributed to improving healthcare outcomes, championing patient rights, and promoting equitable access to health services worldwide. Today, their influence continues to drive innovation and progress in healthcare.

The Pill - Film & Discussion with Dr. Marci Lobel

  In May 1960, the FDA approved the sale of a pill that arguably would have a greater impact on American culture than any other drug in the nation's history. For women across the country, the contraceptive pill was liberating: it allowed them to pursue careers, fueled the feminist and pro-choice movements and encouraged more open attitudes towards sex. Among the key players in the development of the drug were two elderly female activists who paid for the scientific research; a devout Catholic gynecologist who believed a robust sex life made for a good marriage and argued tirelessly that the Pill was a natural form of birth control; and a brilliant biologist who bullied a pharmaceutical company into risking a possibly crippling boycott to develop this revolutionary contraceptive. In describing the obstacles they all hurdled, The Pill presents a compelling account of a society in transition. 

  Join us on Wednesday, March 6th at 2:30 PM in Javits 102 for a film viewing and discussion with Professor Marci Lobel, Ph.D.  The Pill (55 mins), is a film produced by PBS/The American Experience that traces the momentous history and societal impact of the introduction of oral hormonal contraception. Nassau Suffolk Law services provide free legal representation and advocacy to low-income and disabled residents of Long Island for non-criminal matters.

  During this session, we will hear about their academic journey, how they ended up in their roles as championing justice in the legal field, and more about the advocacy work they do.

  Take a break from the stress and strife of daily life. Join us for mocktails and mindfulness exercises to celebrate Women's History Month!

  There will be a 20-minute slow flow vinyasa with modifications for poses where applicable, with guided breathing techniques throughout. Bring your yoga mat! There will only be a limited quantity of mats available for rent. 

  Participants will also be able to engage in mindfulness-based activities and check out resources for ways they can incorporate mindfulness into their daily lives.
