INTERN AT THE WORLD FOOD PRIZE FOUNDATION
The George Washington Carver (GWC) Internship provides students with an opportunity to support the work of the World Food Prize Foundation and learn about issues related to global food insecurity, sustainability, and international development.
About the George Washington Carver Internship
The George Washington Carver internship was established in recognition of Dr. George Washington Carver and the tremendous impact that he had on agriculture. Dr. Carver was an American agricultural scientist and inventor. He is widely known for his methods to prevent soil depletion and his research of alternative crops to cotton in the early 20th century.
GWC Interns will become an integral part of the World Food Prize Foundation and gain a deeper understanding of global food insecurity issues. They will also have the opportunity to interact with World Food Prize Laureates, government officials, international experts in science and agriculture, and food security leaders. GWC Interns come from a variety of academic disciplines and internship roles will be specialized according to an individual’s background, skills, and area of interest.
Internship Program Details
The World Food Prize Foundation has cohorts of interns during the fall, spring, and summer. Applications for Summer 2024 are now closed. The summer internship will run from May 20 - August 16, 2024. GWC Interns work on-site in Des Moines, Iowa, and are compensated with a stipend of $1,500 per internship period. The stipend is paid in two installments, one ($750) in the middle of the period and one ($750) at the conclusion of the period. Interns may be eligible for course credit. A cover letter and resume are necessary to apply. Please note that individuals selected for the internship are subject to a background check.
Each academic semester and summer, a cohort of highly qualified undergraduate and graduate students is chosen for this unique program, which provides interns with the opportunity to take significant responsibility and initiative in planning and carrying out a wide range of the Foundation’s projects in the following areas:

They are enthusiastic and flexible learners, capable of both taking direction and working independently. Applicants must be proficient in English and eligible to work in the U.S. to be considered for placement. All selected interns share a commitment to fulfilling The World Food Prize Foundation’s mission of elevating innovation and inspiring action to increase the quality, quantity, and availability of food for all.
While a minimum commitment of 12-15 hours per week in the hours between 9-5 pm Monday through Friday is required for the Spring and Fall and 16-20 hours per week in the Summer, the program provides flexibility for each intern’s schedule.
