General Motors: Find New Roads (Into the Capitol)

Jul 15, 2021

Following the January 6 insurrection, General Motors announced that it would only be donating to political candidates who align with its core values. But according to a new filing with the Federal Election Commission, it is now apparent that one of GM’s core values is supporting a violent insurrection and attempting to overturn the results of a free and fair election. On June 4, 2021, GM donated $1,000 to Senator Cynthia Lummis (R-WY), who voted to overturn the results of the free and fair 2020 election in Pennsylvania after rioters violently stormed the Capitol building.

“It is dispicable that General Motors has decided that maintaining their access and influence with members of Congress to protect their bottom line is more important than protecting American democracy,” said End Citizens United President Tiffany Muller. “This donation makes it clear that General Motors is prioritizing getting another tax cut over the sanctity of American elections by financially rewarding politicians who supported a deadly assault on the Capitol.”
