A new report from Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW), featured in Axios, highlights corporations that are funding the campaigns of members of Congress who voted to overturn the results of the 2020 election. The biggest donor by far was Toyota, donating $55,000 to thirty-seven GOP lawmakers who objected to the election certification on January 6th. According to Axios, “Toyota gave more than twice as much — and to nearly five times as many members of Congress— as the No. 2 company on the list, Cubic Corp., a San Diego-based defense contractor.”
“Toyota’s decision to fund the campaigns of members of Congress who voted to overturn the will of the people in a free and fair election flies in the face of American democratic values,” said End Citizens United and Let America Vote President Tiffany Muller. “Toyota is showing its customers and the rest of the country that they don’t care about protecting democracy, they care about gaining access and influence with members of Congress in hopes of securing another corporate tax break. Toyota is not only underwriting, but rewarding, a deadly assault on the Capitol.”
