ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) – Minnesota Secretary of State Steve Simon spoke at a town hall put on by the Rochester Community and Technical College student senate.

The goal of the town hall was to promote voting in the 2022 election.

For the third time in a row, Minnesota was number one in the country in voter turnout.

Simon says he wants to keep this trend going in 2022.

There is a chance Olmsted County could have multiple elections this year with the open First Congressional seat after the passing of Congressman Jim Hagedorn.

There will be a special election held on August 9 during the state’s primary to fill the open seat.

But what makes this special election even more difficult is that it’s happening in the middle of Minnesota’s redistricting process.

“There are some people who will be able to vote in the Special Election process to fill the remainder of the term, but won’t be able to vote on the new shape of the first congressional district in the general election that takes place the regular time in November,” Simon said.

If you are in the First Congressional District now under the current map, but won’t be under the new map for 2023, that means you can vote in the one election but not the other.

This will only impact a small group of people, but there are still some of you out there.
